Rivers Assembly siege: Hold Amaechi responsible for crisis

Rivers Gov., Amaechi
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Rivers State Chapter, says the use of hooligans yesterday, Thursday, December 12, 2013, to occupy the premises of the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex by the State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi was provocative and further threatens the peace of the State.
The PDP notes with worry, the presence of armed thugs all around the Assembly Complex who were neither members nor staff of the Legislative Assembly, but came in buses, company of some members of the Assembly loyal to Gov. Amaechi.
The Party in a statement signed by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser to the State Chairman, Felix Obuah, observes that Governor Amaechi’s action of attaching armed thugs to the Assembly members loyal to him had not only undermined the right and quest of the people to have a peaceful legislative business in the State, but also an abuse of the privileges and respect for the office of the Governor.

The Party condemns in strong terms the hiring of thugs in buses in an attempt to take over the Assembly, and also wonders why such twist in his reaction to the Abuja High Court Judgment when shortly after the ruling, his Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari said the government rejected the judgment and has filed both stay of execution and appeal motions against the decision of the Court.
The PDP says if the Governor is uncomfortable with the ruling of the Court on the Assembly’s resumption of functions, the best way to go about it would have been to appeal against it as stated by his Commissioner for Information, rather than using State’s resources to ignite crisis by arming and deploying vicious youths to the Assembly Complex.
“The Party unequivocally says the action of the Governor is unacceptable and will not sit down and watch the State completely destroyed by him (Amaechi) and those who do not want progress and meaningful development in the State,” it emphasized.
The Party adds that it is perturbed over the malevolence intention of the Governor, noting that if the Assembly members loyal to him genuinely wanted to resume sitting as expected of them, why will they put the complex under siege with hoodlums, who arrived the premises in several chattered buses as early as 6pm?
The PDP also reiterates its position and support for the leadership of Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi, as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and further States that it would not fail to ensure that Hon Bipi resumes proceeding in the House accordingly and as provided by the law.
While commending the Police for preventing what would have resulted to another face of chaos at the Assembly Complex, the Party called on the Police Authorities to continue to ensure the Assembly is safe for normal activities. It also called on the public not to be swayed by the antics of the Governor and his aides, but to hold the Governor responsible for any break down of law and order in the State.
It again lauded the Judge of the Abuja High Court on his decision in the matter, which clearly, the Party believes would bring sanity to the Legislative Arm and ensure Checks and Balance in governance in the State.
