Access Bank MD, Aig |
It was learnt that the bank shamelessly
churned out a whopping sum of N200 million on the American R&B diva to
perform in Lagos.
And the alleged millions is coming on the heels of
the bank's recent sacking of about 200 staff members.
Several Nigerians who berated the bank’s
management for spending that much to bring Carey to Nigeria, described the move
as the height of wastage and official profligacy.
Sources revealed that the high-end event saw Carey performing for a few friends and confidants of the retiring MD alongside some top officials of the bank. Most high level staff of Access Bank were reportedly not allowed to attend the event which was held at the upscale Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
While reacting, aggrieved Nigerians and sacked staff of the bank have joined in lambasting Access Bank for spending so much to bring Carey to Nigeria.

A statement presumably from an aggrieved
ex staff which has gone viral on the internet revealed that the shady dealings
of the Access Bank ex boss will soon be made available to the press.
"I can’t imagine why a whole bank, an institution entrusted in keeping public funds will embark on such a monumental waste of spending such a stupendous amount in bringing a musician from the US, for just a party, what kind of party are you doing that can’t pay a Nigerian artiste. We all knew that was why almost 200 staff members were sacked last month to be able to accommodate the wasteful party," the statement read.
Other angry Nigerians have also come out to voice their displeasure at the wasteful spending by the bank authorities.

"What a waste. The corruption in
this land is taking another dimension; this is the same bank that has no
welfare package for staff and they are spending this much on a gig. I wonder
when we'll get it right. I am just sick and tired of this country where nothing
seems to work" an angry Nigerian lamented."
Interestingly, criticisms have also come from the foreign media. American website RadarOnline slammed the 44 year-old for performing in what it described as 'the world's centre of bank fraud and human trafficking'.

The website in an article criticized the
singer for choosing to perform in Nigeria. Carey proudly posted a picture of
herself in a slinky yellow dress and wrote,
“Backstage in Nigeria” on Saturday. It
was learnt that the show doubled as Access Bank’s Christmas Party and farewell
bash for the bank’s outgoing Managing Director.
RadarOnline noted, "While Access Bank is a reputable financial institution, should Carey have known a few basics about the African nation before taking the paycheck? Ironically — given that she was performing for bankers — it seems Carey wasn’t aware Nigeria is well-known as the centre of the world’s email financial crimes! Nigeria is even part of the name — as in “Nigerian 411 Scams.”
