Leading actor and filmmaker Desmond Elliot has finally spoken on the controversial issue of homosexuals in Nollywood, family, work and other germane issues. Read below for the full chat.
Congratulations
on your recent awards at the just concluded Abuja International Film Festival,
how did you feel?
Thank
you very much. I think it is a pointer for me to work harder and do better as
well as push myself to make sure I do my best. I felt fulfilled and it doesn’t
mean I should relent on my oars. It portrays that I need to work more.
You
started out as an actor, why did you divert into directing?
I think directing is in line with my professional
career. It has been like that. Sometimes in life; you may want to be a lawyer
and sometimes you want to upgrade to the position of a judge. It is all about
variety, by trying your hands in different aspects of the industry and see how
it goes.
Would
you say directing has been more profitable to you than directing?
Financially
no. It is a question of doing what you love and not because of the financial
rewards involved. I don’t see directing as a profitable career than acting, though
it fulfils your dream and your career but the financial benefit is not how
people would see it.
Why did you decide to cut your dreads for a low cut?
Being in the creative industry sometimes one is not
completely okay. At a point, you just want to do something that makes you look
different and happy. For me; I was just trying my hand on different things,
cutting the hair, keeping it, doing dreads and all of that to make me look
different.
Has there ever been a point in your life that you shed
midnight tears?
I can’t remember though, but if I had, maybe it was
tears of joy. To be candid, I’m an emotional person, sometimes I cry easily
especially when a friend hurts me. I’m human, so crying is not a new thing to
me.
As a married man, how have you succeeded in keeping
your family away from the public eyes?
I’ve succeeded in doing that because there’s really
nothing to tell. The fact there is that it is not all about Desmond and his
family but Desmond the brand. To me, there’s no point carrying your private
life into the public domain. I think it would be better to keep one’s family
private. I don’t have any specific reason for keeping my family away from the
public but I think my family is different from my career and I love it that
way. To me there’s no story there, that I have a family? It is not a big
deal, but a way of life.
Have you ever had a crush on any girl in the industry?
No! Never, I haven’t.
As one of the hottest faces in the industry how do you
handle your female fans and colleagues especially now that you are married?
I always appreciate them for watching me and admiring
what I do most of the time. The fact there is that you shouldn’t make yourself
too difficult for people to access. I am a simple person, so I handle them with
respect.
How does your wife react watching you on the screen kissing
or seeing you with different women all the time?
She knows that everything ends on the screen. I don’t
do anything behind the camera other than my professional works.
Your wife rarely attends public functions; where else
does she go with you?
Because the kids are still very little, she needs to
be home and take care of them. At least watch over them and make sure
they are fine. That is why you hardly see her at functions
Your background is very confusing, where exactly are
you from?
I’m a Yoruba by tribe. I’m from a place called
Olowogbowo in Lagos Island LGA of Lagos State. My mother is from Delta State,
precisely the Igbo speaking part. I grew up in the city of Jos, Plateau State.
I spent virtually the early part of my life in the northern part of the
country.
You like working mostly with Royal Arts Academy, any special
reason?
Firstly, we share the same ideology. Secondly I’ve
known them for a long time; especially Emem. Thirdly, I also run a company
called Densiot Production and I always collaborate with them as professional
partners.
What is your take on the issue of homosexuality that
is becoming rampant in the entertainment industry?
I’m not an advocate of homosexuality. I have nothing
against the people but I don’t like the practice.
You have been around the industry for years now, aside
acting, what else can you do?
Aside acting, I do endorsements, shows even MC
sometimes for my close friends. But in all, it revolves around acting. I act
every 28 hours of my life.
How romantic are you?
Let me say I could be romantic sometimes.
What about your wife, how romantic is she and what
exactly got you attracted to her?
She is very romantic. Aside her being faithful, I love
her hot legs and sexy mouth. She has this sexy voice and a good spirit.
Do you intend raising more kids with madam?
The situation in the country shows that one needs to
hustle more and for me to add more kids, I need to hustle more.
What do you cherish in a woman?
I’m a Yoruba man; what do you think. What do Yoruba
men like? I like my wife the way she is. To me love is not all about the
physical appearance; it goes beyond that. The downfall of a man is taking
a wrong woman into his house.
You regretted not getting married at a very tender
age, why?
I don’t know but it was part of me. I love kids and
the best way to do it is to settle down.
Have you ever been embarrassed publicly?
That one is sure; people get embarrassed every day.
But I would not want to share the experience with you in public.
When
you are not on location, what else do you do?
Like
now, I want to go home because I’m done for the day. If I’m not on location I
would be at home with my family.
Do
you club?
Occasionally,
but not always. For now my life is all about locations.
Do you
have the intentions of bringing your wife into acting business?
My
wife is part of my production company but not as an actress because she has so
many on her hands.
Do you
have any special person in the industry you would like to work with?
I’ve
worked virtually with everybody in the industry. It also depends on the personality.
But women would always give you back what you give to them.
