Still reeling from the excitement created by MTN Project Fame, the entertainment industry yet again, received another boost on Thursday, October 10, 2013, as 10 winners in the month of September emerged in the first ever digital music competition in Nigeria, MTN Songstar Contest and were presented with mouth-watering prizes at the Ikoyi office of the ICT giant.
The first prize went to Habila Bature, who came all the way from Kaduna State to collect his prize of a brand new Kia Cerrato, Sony Home Karaoke System, Nokia Smartphone and 1 GB monthly data for 6 months. Bature with the alias “Da Whiteman, uploaded his rendition of the song “I Love You” also qualified for the Grand Prize in MTN Songstar Contest.

Speaking at the Prize presentation, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN, Larry Annetts, says that “MTN believes in harnessing the enormous talents in Nigeria and we want to create platforms where they can express themselves and get fulfilled. MTN has a track-record. Anytime MTN, makes a promise, know that it is for real. He further stated further that whenever MTN makes a promise, it is for real.”
The other winners are second place Onyinye Doris, alias Duhriss, who got a birthday gift as she turned 21 years two days ago. She sang Praize’s “Rich & Famous”. Dekunle came 3rd with “Rich & Famous”. Isbzamani sang “Coat of Many Colours” and came 4th, Ebuka Nicholas alias Ms Ebuka came 5th, LarryHoover took responsibility with the song “Sorry Blame It On Me” and came 6th while Wizkid’s “Sexy Mama” saw DQ come seventh.
Makanju Excellent, who had contested in the “I Don Port Video Dance Contest” with his group Q-Loaded and came 28th sang “Rich & Famous” and this time he came 8th, Ifeanyi Okonya, alias “Memo” came 9th with the rendition of “Rich & Famous”, Oluwayemi Oluwafemi with the stage name ‘Femzy Laiter’ came 10th and recounted that his parents refused to follow him to the prize presentation as they did not believe it was real.
Mrs. Nze Chidi, the mother of Duhriss Onyinye, thanked MTN and confessed that she was sceptical and initially tried to discourage her daughter from participating but today she is very proud of her daughter and will support her to achieve her dreams and vowed to do the same to Onyinye’s siblings.
The MTN Songstar competition is the first ever digital musical competition to hold in the country. The ongoing music contest is already making in the digital world. To be part of the competition, the intending participant needs to download the MTN SongStar app, sing along to the selected song and upload the video to YouTube. Winners are determined by videos that get the highest numbers of views. Participants who attempt to do well in the contest by employing the trick of spam views are immediately discredited by MTN.
