Davido (Musician) Africa’s king of hip hop
2014 has been the best year
for Davido and his music career.
The Osun State-born singer,
who has never gone a year without a hit, started 2014 with the release of his
hit song “Aye”. Since then Davido has gone on to sweep all the available awards
in sight within and outside Africa.
Just few weeks after
emerging “Artiste of the Year” at the MTV Africa Music Awards, the singer also
grabbed the “Best African Artistes” at the BET Awards, thus joining the likes
of Tuface, Dbanj and Wizkid as winners of the prestigious awards.
More hits are still expected
from Davido in the coming months and next year, as his sophomore album is
eagerly being expected by music fans and pundits alike.
Phyno (Musician) - New face of indigenous rap
Phyno is one man that has
sensationally changed the face of indigenous rap in Nigeria with his hot Igbo
lyrics. Eccentric Phyno has completely taken indigenous rap to a whole new
level with few years of hitting the music scene. The Anambra State-born music
star with several wave-making collabos, is making his second consecutive
appearance on the E-50 list based on his outstanding performance.
After stunning the music
scene with his hit single “Ghost Mode” which features Olamide, the rapper later
released his debut album “No Guts No Glory” to critical
acclaim.
Phyno has now become one of
Nigeria’s highest selling rappers and it looks like he just got started. Though
he lost out on both awards, he however grabbed two nominations at the just
concluded MTV Africa Music Awards.
Tiwa Savage (Musician)
-Sexy queen of Pop
Last year, she made the Express 50 Most Influential as
the emerging diva in the Nigerian music industry; this year, she returns again
as the only bonafide diva in the music scene. That is how far the Lagos State-born
singer has grown since she came into the scene in 2010 with “Kele Kele Love”.
Tiwa Savage has become a
standard with which we rate females in the Nigerian music industry. After
signing a mega endorsement deal with MTN, she was listed as the only female
Nigerian artiste on the 2014 Star Music Trek artiste roll call and also
recently won the “Best Female” award at the MTV Africa Music Awards.
Don Jazzy (Music Producer/Musician) The Don of music
He remains the only producer
who has featured on the Express 50 list since inception. Don Jazzy deserves it
all.
After overseeing the success
of one of Nigeria’s biggest music exponents, D’banj, Don Baba, as he’s fondly
called has continued in his strides as one of Nigeria’s best and influential
music producers.
After splitting with his
ex-partner D’banj, many doubted his ability to continue producing hit songs and
discovering raw talents. But the Delta State-born producer has surprised many
with the latest artistes assemble on his own record label, Mavin Records.
Home to Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid,
D’ Prince, Coredo Bello and DiJa, Don Jazzy’s Mavin Record is currently sending
electric waves all over the country with their hit anthem, “Dorro Bucci”.
Don Jazzy is also the producer
with the most endorsement deals in the Nigerian music scene, if not the whole
of Africa. He serves as an ambassador to MTN, Loya Milk, and Samsumg. How
influential can one be?
Psquare (Musician) –
Africa’s greatest Pop twins
Peter and Paul Okoye, the
famous pop twins globally known as PSquare are also constant features on the
Express 50 List. Though they didn’t release any album during the year under
review, Peter and Paul are still one of Nigeria’s music heavy weights.
In the year under review,
the duo chose to sort out their personal lives as they both got married to
their baby mamas. Two grand traditional weddings were held by the singers and a
white wedding planned to hold on the same day, is still expected to come.
Psquare also thrilled on the
music scene. With two hit singles (Alingo and Taste the Money (Testimony) the
Anambra State-born pop duo are still able to command one of the biggest
appearance and performance fees in the Nigerian music industry.
During their recent visit to
America, the twins collaborated with respected international rap star, T.I and
their sixth album has been scheduled for release in a few months time. There is
no stopping the Psquare twins!
Tuface Idibia (Musician) –The game changer
In the year under review,
Nigeria’s biggest pop star, Tuface Idibia, had an unusual quiet year musically.
This however never meant he was not going to keep his place in the Express 50
list.
Tuface’s achievement in the
Nigerian music industry, demeanor, longevity and personality has made him a
legend in the industry. The forthcoming release of his sixth album will be a
perfect reminder of how brilliant Tubaba evolves as a game changer in the
industry.
Burna Boy (Musician) The unconventional star
Burna Boy’s arrival on the
Nigerian music scene was welcomed by music buffs and fans alike as he brought
in a new sound in the one dimensioned music industry with his unconventional
style.
Two mixtapes and a debut
album later, Burna Boy continues to impress and churn out exciting projects
that has made him stand out and unique among his peers.
The recent endorsement by
telecom giant, Glo as a brand ambassador was a real testament of how far the
singer has come in the industry and how influential he has become within his
few years of arrival.
Olamide (Musician)-Indigenous lyricist extraordinaire
After Dagrin died in April
2010, the Yourba rap genre was crying for a true ambassador and replacement.
Olamide’s debut “Rapsodi” didn’t
exactly light up and excite Yoruba rap enthusiasts but showed lots of promises.
Fast forward to 2014 and Olamide has not only succeeded in stepping into the
shoes of Dagrin, he has also created a path that every up and coming Yoruba
rapper wishes to follow.
After releasing two albums
within the spate of a year, the Ogun State-born rapper has also been rewarded
with mouthwatering endorsement deals. On July 17, 2013, Olamide became the
first Nigerian to sign an endorsement deal with Cîroc. On October 24, 2013,

Chinedu Okoli famously known
as Flavour still remains one of Nigeria’s greatest exports to the rest of
Africa. Flavour N’abania is known for his ability to sing fluently in Igbo
language. In the last four years, the Anambra State-born musician has made
himself a force to reckon with in the music industry and that also continued in
the year under review.
His current and biggest album
till date “Blessed” which was released in 2012 had singles
which rocked the Nigerian music industry in the year under review. And the endorsement
deals have not stopped pouring in.
Flavour has been endorsed
with ambassadorship roles by big brands like Onga and Globacom.
Patoranking (Musician) New kid on the block
Born Patrick Nnamemeka Okorie, Patoranking is no doubt
one of the biggest revelations of the music industry in the year under
review. The reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter who started his musical
career doing underground collaborations with artistes such as XProject, Konga,
Slam and Reggie Rockstone got fame when he released his 'Alubarika' song
under Timaya’s Dem Mama Records. In February 2014, he signed a record deal with
