On
the morning of 18 April 2014, an avalanche struck Khumbu Icefall, an area just
above Mt Everest basecamp killing 13 and leaving three missing. Discovery
Channel (DStv channel 121) will broadcast a 60-minute documentary, entitled Everest Avalanche Tragedy on Sunday, May
18, which, SHOWBIZPLUSng gathered will include unprecedented access and eyewitness accounts from the
rescue and recovery efforts that took place.
Everest Avalanche Tragedy will document the weeks
leading up to the climb through to the moment the avalanche struck the Khumba
Icefall, one of the most treacherous parts of the mountain, and its
aftermath. Cameras rolled immediately
following, as blocks of ice plummeted down the mountain, making it the
deadliest single-day avalanche in the history on Mt. Everest.
Through
eyewitness accounts, viewers will hear from those who experienced this horrible
tragedy and aftermath including sit down interviews with Joby Ogwyn; Expedition
Leader Garrett Madison, who played a critical role in the recovery; Todd
Burleson, president of Alpine Ascents International who lost five Sherpas and
other key members of the expedition and production teams.

airs exclusively on Discovery Channel (DStv 121) on Sunday, 18 May from 21:00
CAT. In a double bill of unique experiences, the documentary will be followed
by Bear Grylls: Man Vs Everest at
21:55 CAT in a one-hour special that presents stories of the greatest Everest
attempts and achievements over the years.
