Five Nigerian hip-hop music superstars took out time to visit the MTN Project Fame’s academy recently. This was in a bid to encourage the contestants who are gradually moving into the final phases of their stay, on the life-transforming musical reality show. The hip-hop artistes that visited the academy were fan-favourite, Wizkid, KCEE of ‘Limpopo’, Iyanya, Tiwa Savage and Chidinma. The artistes set aside time, to instruct and model all the contestants, as competition for top position, on the musical talent-hunt show, gets intensified
Whereas the artistes made the choice of which contestant to
model, through blind selections, after listening to each of them sing behind
doors, none of the of the contestants was, however, left unattended to. The
contestants on parade were Immaculate, Simon, Niniola, Olawale, Johnny, Jimoh,
David, Margaret, Nancy, Blessing, Rowland and Omolayo.
Asked about their opinions of the show and the contestants,
the artistes were specifically full of admiration for the contestants. Wizkid
was thrilled, he said ‘these contestants are truly gifted and they will go
places’. Asked to comment about the show, KCEE praised MTN: ‘It’s a good thing
MTN is giving these talented youths an opportunity to learn and get better,
such that they can fulfill their dreams for music-superstardom’.
Subsequently, the show witnessed a twist after the five
Nigerian mega-stars visited the academy. At the Nomination show that followed,
all the 12 contestants, in the academy, were placed on probation. The judges
comprising Bibie Brew, Ade Bantu and music producer extraordinaire, TY-Mix,
noted that all the contestants performed below expectation. According to them,’
the stage is high at this level of the competition and all contestants are
expected to raise their performances’.
However, last weekend, after collating viewers’ votes, for
all the contestants, the five contestants with the least number of votes were
placed on probation. These five contestants were Johnny, Blessing, Jimoh, Nancy
and David.
Knowing two contestants would have to leave the show, that
evening, the contestants gave their best when allowed to re-do the songs that
brought got them into probation, the previous week.
They were all most thrilling and enchanting. But Blessing
who sang ‘Irreplaceable’, originally sang by Beyonce, and Jimoh who rendered
Elton John’s ‘Sacrifice’, in addition to the Ghanaian David who did ‘Close to
You’ were outstanding. Therefore, the Faculty, led by ‘Mum’ Joke Silva, the
principal, saved Jimoh and David was saved from elimination by the panel of
judges. Blessing left it late to get back into the academy. She was preferred
by the contestants who were not on probation.
Consequently, Nancy and Johnny were evicted from the MTN Project
Fame West Africa season 6 music academy. Nancy, who hails from Ghana, only had
a brief stay in the academy. She showed a glimmer of talents, though, but had a
limited time to make an impression, after beating her fellow youtube entrants,
to make a Wild-Card entry into the academy. Johnny had had the good luck of
being saved from eviction twice by his fellow contestants. This time, the
gifted pianist, couldn’t get the needed votes from his co-contestants. It was,
of course, the end of the road for the two great singers. They later shared a
memorable evening with their fans and family at Road Runners Nite Club, in
Akoka.
