When the crème de la crème of Nollywood converges next month for the Nollywood Movies Award, all attention will be on the stiff competition for Best Lead Actress. In a hot battle for the coveted award are six A-list actresses who include Rita Dominic (The Meeting), Nse Ikpe-Etim (Mr. & Mrs.), Mercy Johnson (Dumebi), Funke Akindele (Ma’ami), Bimbo Akintola (Hoodrush) and Uche Jombo (Mrs. Somebody).
At the nominee night which held recently in Lagos,
Alfred Soro, Executive Director of Nollywood Movies Awards revealed that winners
for all the 26 categories will be made known at a glamorous event scheduled for October
12 at Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Soro added that the winners will be determined by a
jury comprising seasoned filmmakers and movie aficionados.
Currently in its second edition, the NMA is organized
by Europe-based Nollywood Channel on Sky 239. “We are determined to put on an
event which we can show to the world with pride. As the saying goes, we are
dedicated to ‘putting forward Nigeria’s best face,’” he enthused.
Anchored by filmmaker, Charles Novia, the unveiling
of the nominees attracted some Nollywood personalities including Bimbo
Akintola, Omoni Oboli, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Susan Peters, Chelsea Eze, OC Ukeje, Mary
Chukwu, Ashionye Raccah, Akeem Rahman among others.
Also in contention for Best Lead Actor are Bayo
Alawiye (The Gods Are Still Not To Blame), Gabriel Afolayan (First Cause), Iyke
Adiele (Broken), OC Ukeje (Hoodrush), Moses Armstrong (Udeme Mmi) and Wale Ojo
(Phone Swap).
The coveted award for Best Movie is being contended
for by six movies that has lately dominated Nollywood box-office namely;
Hoodrush, Journey to Self, The Meeting, Phone Swap, Udeme Mmi and Mrs. Somebody.
Expected to jointly anchor the show is the duo of
top comedian, Basketmouth and Nollywood actresss, Dakore Egbuson.
