Hundreds of Nigerians have paid tribute to Nollywood icon, Bukky Ajayi, who passed on today aged 82.
The reaction to the passing of the actress, described by many as a mother to the country’s bourgeoning movie industry, has been celebratory rather than sorrowful.
The late actress had in March been honoured along with Sadiq Daba at the 2016 edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for their contributions towards the development of the nation’s movie industry.
And many Nigerians rejoiced at the face that she was celebrated and her contributions to the industry recognised during her lifetime rather than after her death as is often the case.
Here are some of the reactions by Nigerians on Twitter:
Thank you Bukky Ajayi. For the wonderful stories you told through your acting. Rest well.
This makes the celebration of Bukky Ajayi by AMVCA even more beautiful. A great closing to an extraordinary character.
Bukky Ajayi was a legend. We use the term “legend” a bit carelessly nowadays, but she was of a golden generation with a commanding presence.
May the Almighty Allah grant Mama Bukky Ajayi the best of place in paradise. May her gentle soul rest perfect peace.
The tribute won’t have been complete without reference to the movies she starred in.
RMD, Bimbo Akintola, Liz Benson, Teju Babyface were casts, but Bukky-Ajayi made Diamond Ring memorable. Fine thespian she was.
