Nollywood is currently boiling with the public rejection of the newly
appointed chairman of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) by the federal
government. Stakeholders and leading practitioners are seriously kicking
against the recent appointment of Danjuma Dabo, as the new boss of the board.
And the reason for their seething anger was because of the appointment of Dabo,
a MARINE ENGINEER, to oversee the affairs of a creative industry as big as
Nollywood, the globe’s second largest filmmaker in terms of quantity.
Parts of a protest BBM sent to us by Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN),
national president, Ibinabo Fiberesima and duly circulated among other
aggrieved members read: “This is the height of insult and a big slap on the
face of filmmakers and the entire stakeholders of the film industry in Nigeria.
How can a marine engineer be made Chairman of the Nigerian Film Corporation?
The government might as well make a furniture maker the new health minister or
a farmer the attorney general of the federation… All true blood practitioners
should rise and say no to this. We need professionals who understands the
challenges of our growing industry. This is a no to this appointment.”
We will definitely keep you posted as this drama between Aso Rock and
Nollywood unfolds.
