Is D’banj’s empire really worth millions of dollars?

D'banj is a business minded entertainer but he is not yet a mogul who has a million dollar empire like Jay Z or Diddy.

On Monday, June 20, 2016 Destiny Magazine released it’s latest edition and it featured Nigerian pop star D’banj on the cover.

Now the striking thing about the cover was D’banj exactly but what was written about him. “The million dollar empire of D’banj” was written boldly beside the pop star.

No doubt D’banj is a household name in Nigeria and quite popular but when people think about the entertainer they think of a charismatic artiste and not a business mogul.
For years D’banj has paraded himself as an entertainment business mogul with interests in agriculture, music and telecommunications.
D'banj

D’banj rightfully proclaims he is the brains behind Koko Garri, Koko Mobile and DB Records. I learnt a long time ago that activity is not the same as productivity. How many of his companies yield a yearly profit? That’s an optimistic question. How many of D’banj’s products can be found in the market? The only people I have seen take Koko Garri are people who were given the franchise Garri by the singer himself. I don’t think I have seen one person buy Koko Garri from the market. HisBeats By Dre line never made it to the Nigerian market. Koko mobile- non existent.

So you can see how that magazine headline is kind of wrong. D’banj does not have a business empire. You can say he has a few business interests but saying he has an empire is a different ball game that the singer is not playing right now.
You can argue about his endorsements, presently only one withSLOT, but I don’t think the cheques from his endorsements could help him cross the one million dollars mark. As for music D’banj might still be getting cool money from the biggest hit of his career ‘Oliver Twist’ but we all know his recent songs haven’t been commercial successes.

Don’t get it twisted (sorry I could not resist) is D’banj a rich music act? Yes he is. D’banj is arguably one of the richest acts in the country but personal fortune and business fortunes are two different things. It should also be stated that even though his no music mogul yet he is a music entrepreneur who finds new ways to leverage from his brand.
The fault here goes to some certain publications who make claims that are not true or don’t have facts to back them up. Estimating people’s wealth in this country is hard because people don’t like disclosing their finances for certain reasons so proclaiming a million dollar empire brazenly without hard facts is playing to the gallery.
D’banj is a business minded individual, key emphasis on individual. A business empire is his ultimate goal but he is not there yet.----PULSE.NG
