The Nigerian comedy terrain is no doubt a very big, booming and money-spinning industry.
It has created jobs for many, made several struggling youths millionaires and transformed hitherto ordinary people into instant celebrities and role models.
In this special report, leading journalist and Daylight.ng publisher/editor-in-chief, AZUH AMATUS, unveils his best five Nigerian “old school” comedians.
Azuh’s report takes a critical look at these multi-talented rib crackers who are above 40 years of age, and are still dictating the pace in the highly competitive industry, despite the intimidating presence of several young and equally talented “new school” competitors.
OKEY BAKASSI
Okechukwu Mc Anthony Onyegbule famously known as Okey Bakassi, is unarguably one of the most talented comedians from this part of the divide.
Bakassi holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Agricultural Engineering from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt.
Despite being an engineer, Bakassi is an accomplished and revered entertainer.
The father of three, who has anchored and hosted several high profile shows and events within and outside Nigeria, has equally distinguished himself in Nollywood as a leading actor, producer and director.
Unassuming Bakassi, who hails from Imo State, is truly a force to reckon with in the Nigerian comedy firmament, where his footprints are legendary.
Interestingly, Bakassi’s originality and ability to tell jokes from real and imaginary situations stands him out.
In fact, Bakassi is to comedy in Nigeria, what Messi is to football.
Basorge Tariah
BASORGE TARIAH JNR.
Basoene Tariah better known as Basorge is one leading Nigerian comedian, many have come to respect and admire for his deep sense of humour and ability to dish out fresh and mature jokes effortlessly.
Aside comedy, Rivers State-born Tariah, is a respected actor, director and award winning dancer.
His rich repertoires of creative and contemporary jokes are the hallmarks that usually stand him out in the very competitive industry bursting with many pretenders.
The Theatre Arts graduate of the University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, is an unrepentant apostle of pure and unadulterated comedy, which he has consistently preached and practised in his thriving career.
Adeyinka Adeyinka
GBENGA ADEYINKA
From a very humble beginning, Gbenga Adeyinka The First, has risen to the pinnacle of his career through dint of hard work, resilience and doggedness.
Adeyinka, a university of Lagos English graduate, has a special way of calming frayed nerves with his elevated style of comedy that is uniquely packaged, presented and delivered for maximum enjoyment.
Adeyinka distinguished himself in the industry after few years of arriving by headlining and cracking ribs at some of the biggest corporate and social events in Nigeria and beyond.
He is no doubt, one of the most talented comedians raising the bar in the federal republic of Nigeria and at the same time impacting his generation positively with his God’s given talent.

Klint De Drunk
Klint Ikemefuna Igwemba famously known as Klint De Drunk is a true definition of multiple talents.
He is a stand up comedian of repute, recording musician, actor, fine artist, painter and an accomplished fashion designer.
Comedy to him comes very natural and his spontaneity is awesome, enchanting and enthralling.
These fascinating qualities give the Anambra State-born comedian an edge over his contemporaries, thus helping to separate him from the crowd of impostors.
This bundle of talent redefined the art of slap stick in Nigeria and further elevated it to an enviable height that is yet to be matched.
His special style of jokes delivery is still an unending topic of discussion, especially among comedy buffs.

JULIUS AGWU
Although, very controversial and dreaded by many for attacking personalities in his jokes and jibes, Choba, Rivers State-born top comedian, Julius Agwu is undeniably one of Nigeria’s best when it comes to the business of humour and ribs cracking.
The University of Port Harcourt theatre arts graduate and father of two was among the few practitioners that repositioned and elevated the comedy sector to where it is currently.
In fact, his annual Crack Ya Ribs, was among the first comedy shows in Nigeria to attract corporate sponsorships and equally revolutionised the industry, when it began over a decade ago with a bang.
Diminutive Agwu’s originality, crazy humour and controversial jokes are the qualities that have kept him at the top in the business for almost two decades.
Aside comedy, the Okombo crooner, is also an accomplished actor, musician and an entertainment entrepreneur of repute.
