There’s just too much Nigeria in this faith-based EP that is the culmination of years of work between Don Moen and Frank Edwards.
Don Moen, one of the most respected figures of Christianity is an American singer-songwriter, pastor, and producer of Christian worship music. He is one of the great Gospel artistes who shaped Nigeria’s earliest brush with new-age worship music as his songs penetrated the country in the 90s. One of his classics, ‘Give Thanks, is still an evergreen staple of Christian worship in Nigeria.
Frank Edwards is the poster boy of the Nigerian Hip Christian movement. With many albums to his credit, the contemporary Christian singer-songwriter and recording artist from Enugu State, hasn’t only done well for himself, his artistry has spawned the careers of the acts signed under his record label, Rocktown Records, which is home to recording artists such as Edwards himself, Gil, Divine, King BAS, Nkay, and David among others.
His 2015 “Rennaisance” album received massive promotion boost last year, with Gospel superstar and worship favorite, Don Moen announcing a collaboration on a record. That project was initially intended to be made into an EP of five songs, but was delayed until now.
A 6-tracker, “Grace” EP aims to be a confluence of sounds from both artistes. It both revered for its symbolic meaning; as Nigeria’s best export collaborates with an international superstar. It’s more akin to Wande Coal collaborating with Will Smith on a project.
The project is packed with conventional worship drawn from two cultures; the vibrant Nigerian Igbo spectrum, and the US template. Opener ‘Eze Ndi Eze’ straight up plays the most obvious gimmick of the project: the novelty of having Don Moen singing in the local Igbo dialect. Before things get more mainstream with ‘Feel your love’.
But the best is saved for ‘You Alone’, a collaboration that is worth its weight in gold. Opening with a haunting mid-eastern chant, and progressing to militant drumming, and a brief prayer. The two stars work their best angles to provide the anchor of the project which ends up with a rapturous repetitive delivery of the sentence “You Alone Are God.”
Ultimately “Grace” EP is a symbolic addition to this generation of Christian worship songs and elevates both Frank Edwards and his message of light and reverence.
