Okey Uzoeshi Rita Dominic |
Tell
us more about yourself.
My
name is Okey Uzoeshi. I am an actor and
a singer. I am into modeling as well. I am a very simple person but people
sometimes take my simplicity for stupidity but I will never allow anyone change
who I am. I went to Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, Imo State, where I studied Science
Laboratory Technology and majored in Micro Biology. Personally, I love learning
and I am also very teachable.
How
did you start with acting since you majored in sciences?
Well,
I just finished secondary school at that time and as I was walking across the
street on a fateful day after the morning mass. I am a roman catholic. A man
walked up to me and told me about how he wants to take me into modeling and
give me a career.
At
first I was scared due to the fear of kidnappers in town but eventually I later
worked with the guy and he took me to his agency. That was the beginning of my
modeling career and from modeling, I went into music. I joined a group called EXPLOIT but I later
left the group.
As
for acting, i never knew I was going to be an actor and as a matter of fact, I
never considered it as a career. But in 2006, a couple of friends told me about
an audition. But I was very reluctant, so they actually got the form for me. That
was where I met Sola Foshudo; he was one of the judges in the audition.
Meanwhile,
I had doubts because I was into modeling but I passed the audition. Although I
didn’t win but I made it to the top 10 and that was more or less a starting
point for me. At that point I got so much encouragement from Sam Dede, Charles
Novia, Bimbo Akintola and I decided to give it a shot. Subsequently, I got my first movie to play a
role alongside Stephanie Okereke.
What
were your parents reactions seeing you deviate from science to acting?
My
dad didn’t find it funny at all because he wanted me to be a medical doctor; he
even got me my lab coat, stethoscope, medical books and every other thing that
was science related. It was more like he had already had my life planned and
when I told him about my zeal for acting and entertainment, he didn’t find it
funny at all because he was really concerned about my survival.
Nevertheless,
when he discovered that I was succeeding, he changed his mind. On the other
hand, my mum has been very supportive from day-one because she believes in
maximizing your full potential and doing what you really want. So, she was not
indifferent about my choice of career.
What
was your first major Job?
My
first job was major was ‘Shattered Imagination’ by Emem Isong where I was asked
to act alongside Stephanie Okereke as her boyfriend. I have also played a
romantic role with Stephanie Okereke and Omotola Jalade Ekehinde, which was an
honor for me because I know that there are so many people out there who are
looking for this opportunity and here I am doing this. I will just say I am
very fortunate. Aside that, I have done other movies with Emem Isong. One of my
first films, I got N30, 000 as my take home pay.
What
role can't you play as an actor?
Well,
I am an actor and I am seen as one of the best in the industry. I can fit into
any script as long as I have the basic understanding of what the director
wants. I can act Nude but not completely nude. When I get carried away while
acting romantic roles, I try to keep it professional because there are a lot of
people behind the camera.
Tell
us about your “ALAN POZA” role.
It’s
a movie I did with Charles Novia. Although it is new but it is in the
cinema. I played the role of “Kokori”. It was very demanding role. But
basically ALAN POZA focuses on the name itself. It tells a story about a guy who likes to pose,
very troublesome and likes to take over people’s property especially their wives.
Generally, it’s a very hilarious movie which centers on the youth. It was a
movie that was really watched and it even gave me more recognition because
people I never knew would walk up to me and exchange pleasantries even in an
uncomfortable surrounding. But it has been an awesome experience during and
after the shooting of the movie.
Aside
acting what else do you do?
Well,
like I said I am also into modeling and I do adverts as well. Recently, I did
an advert for Guinness and Gordon Spark.
What
are the biggest achievements you have recorded in the industry?
When
someone walks up to me and says ‘I saw what you did, I liked it and I learnt
from it” that is my biggest achievement. I don’t really look for something very
big to tag as an achievement because I am a person that likes it when my work
is appreciated and I feel very happy and satisfied. Aside that, Award
Nominations also is an achievement.
What
is your take on the high rate of substandard movies in Nollywood?
Well,
the truth is, a lot of people are not willing to work anymore. They just want
to sit back with their fingers crossed without doing anything and they expect
to make money back immediately. That is why we have a lot of poorly written
script which is actually a product of bad input and rush. So, I believe that
people who want to produce anything should make sure they look out for what the
public want and give them the best of it. They should also put in everything
necessary in other to get the best result. That includes the financial aspect of it.
As
for me, I don’t watch all these home videos. I believe we can do better and
even accomplish all our set goals but it all boils down to hard work.
How was your growing up days?
It was okay, I won’t really say I
had all I wanted. But now that I am
grown, I can actually look back to those days and appreciate what my parents
went through for us. My parents cherished us so much that we didn’t notice we
were lacking anything.
My Mum would rather wear one dress
for days just to make sure we have everything. It was so amazing; I really do
appreciate it now.
If you have a chance what will
change about yourself?
Nothing, nothing at all, I think I
am okay, let me not be greedy.
What is your relationship status?
I am into a very serious
relationship and I love my girlfriend so much. She also quite understands the
kind of jobs I do. So we don’t have a problem with that at all. She is lovely,
caring and very supportive.
How far can you go to protect your
relationship?
Very far, I am a lover not a fighter
I don’t joke with my woman.
Who are those big names you have
worked with?
I have worked with Bimbo Akintola,
Omotola, and Rita Dominic.
If you have the chance to date an
actress, who would that be?
They are much, but for the question
it will be Kehinde Bankole. I think she is a wonderful lady; she has been very
wonderful to me or probably Rita Dominic. She is also a very beautiful and
talented act. I cherish them so much.
Who are those people you are looking
up to?
Ramsey Noah is a wonderful actor. He is one actor that can never be
underutilized by Nigerian producers. He has got a bag of talents. I give it to
Ramsey every day. He is my best in Nollywood.
