Jaywon needs little or no introduction since hitting stardom with his street anthem song, This Year. In this riveting interview, Jaywon revealed some interesting things about his childhood, career and love life.

 

 

It was reported recently that you have left Kennis Music, how true is that?

That is not true. I am still with Kennis Music and I am releasing my forthcoming album on that label. I was misinterpreted when I said I was building a team for myself during an interview. I did not say I was leaving Kennis Music. By my statement, I meant I was building a platform for myself inside Kennis and not outside of the label.

The truth is, issues of all sorts happen everywhere, there’s no record label in Nigeria that has no problem either from the artistes or staff. To complain is just a normal thing. If you go to other companies, people would still complain of mismanagement in one or two areas. It’s a normal thing to complain and it will get to some point that you just have to stop complaining and face the work, but for me, I don’t complain of anything. I just want to do my job because it’s my life and career, but if you have a boss and he or she is not doing what he or she is supposed to be doing, you just have to do it yourself and if your boss is ready to work with you along the line, then you guys should work together.

 

You were silent for a while; did you run out of hit songs?

It was deliberate and I won’t say it was an issue. Everybody needs to grow and I always tell people to assess themselves and check if they are growing. This should be done every now and then. Then, you make the necessary corrections. May be, I noticed certain things about me and I took time out to make amends. In the past, there were some things I did which I wished I never did. Sometimes, because you are signed to a record label, you feel they should do everything for you and as a result, you let go of many things or don’t take responsibility for what you should.

 

So, what have you been up to?

I am working on the video of a song I did with Tiwa Savage. I am working with Tiwa because I enjoy working with female artistes. I love female artistes. In the past, I worked with Goldie and Essence. I have a new video out, ‘Madantin’ and it has got a lot of reviews. I am working on an album entitled, ‘Product of an Environment’ and it’s my third.

 

How did you receive the inspiration to do the song, This Year?

I was just in the studio to do a song for my fans and we decided to start the New Year with a prayer song. The idea was to touch the lives of people positively. But before we knew it the response was overwhelming. The song is more or less an anthem even outside the shores of Nigeria. People call me from America, UK and other parts of the world to commend my effort. The truth is, it’s the grace of God and the urge to do something different. I just needed to be different from everybody and that was what brought about the song and since its release everybody seems to love it. In the industry, everybody is talking about it but we give God the glory that we could bring out a song that everybody loves and we thank all the fans who have been supportive; those who have been there since the beginning and they are still very much around.

I won’t lie to you; the song has done very well in the short time of its release. As a matter of fact, the same song brought me back to the music scene and put me on the lips of every music lover in and outside the country. They have been calling almost everyday requesting for this same song. We just give thanks to Almighty God and to all the people that have been encouraging us, especially our friends in the electronic media, print media, radio DJs, presenters and bloggers. I thank everyone for being supportive of my career.

When we released this song This Year – Odun yi, I personally didn’t know it would be this successful. It is not up to two months and its video is not up to one month but the song is everywhere. A lot of people are talking about it.

How has the song help your career?

So far, the music has helped me, despite the fact that money isn’t coming in yet but hopefully, this year is going to be different and better because already everything is looking great and we give God the glory.

How do you cope with female admirers?

I cope well with them. I know how to treat them fine and how to make them happy. I also know when to time myself. I limit my hanging out with them because there is time to play and time to work but if I wish to get anybody impregnated or get married to anyone, I’m ready and nobody is going to stop me. I have a girlfriend and we are in a serious relationship and she also understands the nature of my job.

Do you have a girlfriend?

Of course I do, I am in a serious relationship. She is beautiful, cool, sexy and lovely and she is my best friend.

 

But there was a rumour that you have a wife and child in your hometown?

I don’t have any child, wife or secret lover in my hometown, that’s not true; it is absolutely a fake and fabricated story.

Tell us how life was growing up in Kogi?
My growing up was great because I had the best mum in the world. And you know what it is like when you have the best mummy in the world; you won’t have any problems. Even if there are problems, your mum will cover up and it will look like there is no problem and she’ll make sure you are happy. For me, it was great. I lost my dad years ago. Ever since then, my mum has been doing everything for us. I attended the Federal Polytechnic, Bida for my National Diploma and proceeded to Abuja for my industrial training. It was from there that I came to Lagos and that was how the journey started.

What was it like losing your dad?

When you have the kind of mum I have, you won’t feel any loss because my mum made sure that she filled the vacuum.

 

What do you detest about the music industry?

I detest a whole lot of things. I don’t like the fact that a lot of people are fake and I hate fake people. I hate them with a passion. That’s why Tuface Idibia will always be a mentor to me till I die. King Sunny Ade is also my mentor and father to all of us. As famous as he is, Baba will call you and pray for you, even when he doesn’t know you, he will show you love. People like Femi Anikulapo-Kuti will show you love and support you. But some people are not even anywhere yet and they feel they are on top of the game and all that. Things are not done that way. We really give thanks to God and appreciate our fans for believing in the Jaywon brand.

 

What’s the craziest thing a fan has ever done to you?

In Dublin, Ireland, a fan asked me to autograph her boobs and she was crying that I must do it. I had to do it because she wanted it really bad.

 

Do you like boobs that much?

(Laughs)… Every man likes good things. I grew up sucking the milk from my mum’s breast and that is why I am alive because if she didn’t give me, I might not be alive today.

 

What features do you look out for in a woman?

When you see my girlfriend, you would know. I am not saying more than that.
