A group, Concerned Entertainment Veterans of Nigeria (CEVON), led by veteran actor, Ejike Asiegbu,
has called on Nigerians to desist from the incessant insults of the person and
office of Mr. President, Goodluck Jonathan. During a chat with SHOWBIZPLUS, the group stated that the affront had become a recurring
decimal by politically distraught nay sayers who believe the office of the
president is their prerogative and birthright.
Asiegbu, while reading a communique signed by himself and other members including Abubakar Usman, Steve
Eboh, Ibiwari Sekibo, Ebong Clement, Maigari Abdulahi, Emeka Rollas, and Rita
Edochie at a recent well attended press conference, said the group noted thus:
“We have watched our polity (Nigeria) in the
past few years and are disappointed, disheartened, sad and embarrassment by
happenings across the country which has heated up the entire political space
thereby creating fear, tension and uncertainty."
He continued: "As concerned members of the entertainment community and as
watchdogs of the society, role models, brand ambassadors, in Nigeria, we will
be doing the entire Nigerian a disservice if we do not speak up on some
challenges that we are faced with. Nigeria has had its share of bad and good leaders,
all celebrated, adored, and even worshipped despite their shortcomings at the
detriment of the masses.
Some of our politicians arrogated to themselves the sole
right, authority bestriding like colossus as Moses and Elijah of our present
generations. It has become a recurring decimal for politicians who are busy unnecessarily
heating up the polity with cries of war, jumping ship from one political party
to the other."
The revered thespian added,“Whilst we recognize it is their right to make inward and
outward movement to the political party of their choice as enshrined in the
constitution, Nigerians should be absolved of their intimidating activities and
crass political ideologies leanings. It is a shame and sad parody of experience
that most of the political parties are devoid of vision, ideologies, and
manifestos.”
