Xmas celebrations: Nigerians cry under high prices of foodstuffs

Nigerians shopping for Xmas
Nationwide reports monitored by SHOWBIZPLUS has revealed that the on going Christmas celebrations has affected virtually all prices of food stuffs, clothes and transportation fares throughout the country.
For example, a bag of rice, which sold between N11,500 and N12,000 before, now sells for N13,000.
These high prices of goods and services have left many Nigerian families groaning and cursing, with several of them unwilling to celebrate Christmas like they used to do before.
Meanwhile, an angry and frustrated shopper who spoke with us on the condition of anonymity blamed Goodluck Jonathan for the woes, sufferings and hard ships millions of Nigerians are currently going through, especially at Xmas. "Jonathan has failed Nigerians. This is the worst Xmas Nigerians are managing to celebrate. We are no longer smiling and suffering, but suffering and crying."

Freed Russian punk band members criticised Putin after release

Pussy Riot
According to Reuters, two members of Russian punk protest band Pussy Riot freed from prison on Monday derided President Vladimir Putin's amnesty that led to their early release as a propaganda stunt and promised to fight for human rights.
Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 24, shouted "Russia without Putin" following her release from a Siberian prison, hours after band mate Maria Alyokhina, 25, was freed from jail in the Volga River city of Nizhny Novgorod.
The women had two months left to serve but walked free days after a pardon from Putin freed former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky eight months before the end of his more than 10-year jail term, decisions widely seen as intended to improve Russia's image before it hosts the Winter Olympics in February.
"It is a disgusting and cynical act," Tolokonnikova, looking relaxed in a black coat and chequered shirt, told Reuters at her grandmother's apartment building in the snowbound Siberian city of Kransoyarsk where she was jailed.

How Mikhail Kalashnikov, creator of AK47, died at 94

Kalashnikov
The Russian creator of the world's most popular assault rifle died Monday; he was 94. Interviewers always asked Mikhail Kalashnikov the same question and he always gave the same answer: Yes, he could sleep at night. Quite easily, thank you.
Kalashnikov, creator of the AK-47, a cheap, simple, rugged assault rifle that became the weapon of choice for more than 50 standing armies as well as drug lords, street gangs, revolutionaries, terrorists, pirates and thugs the world over, died Monday at a hospital in Izhevsk, the capital of the Russian republic of Udmurtia, according to a government spokesman. Kalashnikov was 94.
Over six decades, the AK-47 — sometimes called the Kalashnikov — became a staple in guerrilla raids and gang drive-bys. It was so easy to operate that children as well as professional soldiers could fire 650 deadly bursts per minute.
