Emeka Ihedioha, one of the leading contenders for 2015 Imo governorship race |
The debate for power shift in the governorship of Imo State has
been re-echoed as a Diaspora-based group, Alliance of Owerri Zone Indigenes in
Diaspora (AOZID) called upon political stakeholders to allow Owerri senatorial
zone produce the next governor in 2015.
In a press release signed by Professor
Edward Oparaoji, Dr. Charlie Nzeakor, and the representatives of the federal
constituencies in the State, the group lamented that Owerri zone has had the
least and incomplete shot at the governorship office of the state, stressing
that 2015 is the time to correct the anomaly.
Noting that Owerri has “exercised patience and supported other
zones as they aspired for the leadership of the State
while waiting for an appropriate time to demand equity, justice, and balance,”
the group stated: “That time is now! Having put State before region, fairness
demands that our brethren from other zones support the gubernatorial ambition
of Owerri zone, at this time.”
The group lamented that the disparity against Owerri “is not a reflection of the will or
zeal of the people of Owerri zone, but rather as a result of backroom political
intrigues and horsetrading,” adding: “After all these years of executive leaderships from other
zones with marginal development and returns, we believe that a different
trajectory of deliverables and/or performance is needed in Imo State.
“With the best and most educated citizenry in Nigeria, Imo State
cannot continue to trail behind in most developmental indices. It is really time
to try something different. Owerri zone is richly endowed with quality and
credible men and women, qualified to govern Imo State.”
The US-based group vowed “to hereby commit to putting all our
resources and credibility on the line, to ensure that our candidate is elected
the next governor of Imo State. Subsequently, he or she will be held fully
accountable for creating thousands of well-paying jobs, bringing quality
education, industrial and technologically-based economic vibrancy, healthcare,
water schemes, electricity, good road networks, fiduciary probity, security,
and indeed modernity to the State. He or she will be supported with our largely
untapped talents and expertise from across the globe, to harness and unleash
the immense socio-economic potentials of Imo State.”
