Sokoto Tragedy: Tears as 15 passengers drown in river

No fewer than 15 passen­gers drowned last Thursday night when the vehicle they were traveling in suddenly lost control and plunged into River Rima in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
An eyewitness said the victims were returning from a journey to their home­town, Dan-Wawaru village en-route Takakume village in the same local govern­ment area.
“They attended a re­ligious ceremony on the fateful day and the driver was assumed to have fallen asleep, and as a result he lost control of the vehicle,” he said.

Spokesman of the state police command, DSP Al- Mustapha Sani confirmed the incident to newsmen in Sokoto on Saturday.
Sani said that the ill-fated Avensis Toyota model ve­hicle was conveying 17 persons at the time of the ac­cident, and that only two of them survived.
He said that the remains of the deceased were evacuated by the police attached to the Goronyo police division.
Sani said that the dead per­sons had since been buried by their respective families according to Islamic rites.
Sunday Sun learnt that the state Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko was saddened by the incident.
An aide of the governor said the governor had since condoled with the fami­lies of the deceased, urging them to regard the incident as an act of God, and prayed God for the repose of their souls.
