Stephanie Okereke receives US award



The flag of Nollywood, arguably the pride of Africa and darling of Nigerian movie buffs, was further hoisted higher recently when leading actress Stephanie Okereke was honoured with the African Jewel Award at the 6th annual African Goodwill Awards, US. Okereke received the plaque for her positive representation of Africanwomen through her inspiring works and evolving movie career. Celebrities including the legendary singer Chaka Khan, actor Isaiah Washington, comedian and actress M’onique, iconic soloist Hope Foye, apostle Frederick Price and Dr. Deborah Hyde, all attended the colourful event.It would be recalled that delectable Okereke came into the Nollywood scene in 1997 as a student of the University of Calabar. Aftergraduating, her thirst for an acting career propelled her into Nollywood fulltime. She made her mark with themovie Emotional Crack, which premiered at the African Film festival in April 2004. With over 90 films to her name, Okereke is continually building her brand in the movie industry. A recent graduate of the New York Film Academy,she has also expanded her title to include that of a director, producer and a writer with the introduction of her latest movie:Through the Glass. It premiered at the Silver Screen Theatre of the Pacific Design Centre on October 18,2008, in Hollywood, California amid glitz and razzmatazz. Constantly setting her eyes on Hollywood and the global film stage, Okereke is truly a Nollywood heroine.The African Goodwill Awards ceremony celebrates the greatest quality of mankind and the inherent human spirit of giving. The event showcases the challenges and accomplishments of these men and women whose commitment ingreat measure have given hope to the poor in Africa, the Caribbean and American inner cities.The event also celebrates achievements in community service.Okereke’s international recognition is only the beginning of her goals for her brand, her passions and her country.






Nollywood stars remember Marley @ O’Jez

Leading hangout, O’ Jez Entertainment Centre, Surulere, Lagos came alive penultimate Sunday evening when several Nollywood stars and musicians gathered to celebrate late Reggae icon, Bob Marley. The well-attended occasion was the commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the death of the legend, from Jamaica. Put together by O’Jez Music, the evening climaxed when the Mamuzee brothers teamed up with rising Reggae apostle, Jahcub to thrill the grand gathering. As they rendered several hit numbers from the various works of the legend, the capacity filled hall kept cheering and rocking alongside the band. The groove reached a feverish pitch, when some top actors in the house happily marched to stage and displayed their dancing skills, to the admiration of their fans.



Top actor, Charles Awurum raps EFCC

Eastern Nigerian based top actor, Charles Awurum will be hitting shelves soon with his debut album. Entitled EFCC (Every Face Commits Crime), the thespian turned crooner, disclosed that the hilarious work, is basically a musical satire on our society and also raises moral questions on corruption, polygamy, love, religion and other social problems bedeviling the society.
EFCC, is a seven tracker, comprising five vocals and two instrumentals. It features stars like: John Okafor, Sam Loco Efe, Victor Osuagwu, Mamuzee, Dauda and Ugo Stevenson. The album also has Angela Ephraim as the lead female vocalist.
Continuing, Awurum, who is also the chairman of Conference of Imo State actors, said EFCC, is part of his contributions towards the re-branding of Nigeria. “It will go a long way in sanitizing our people’s mind towards a better Nigeria, we support the minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili on her move to re-brand Nigeria.”
The video of EFCC was jointly directed by Zion .O. Nwaigwe and Awurum. It is being marketed nationwide by Magic Lens pictures and distributed by Ehbbiy Ventures. The act hopes to embark on a nationwide tour soon, to further promote the work.



NFVCB partners LSFVCB


In the spirit of moving the nation’s motion picture industry forward and further promoting the joint initiative between the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board (LSFVCB), an hour mock raid on hawkers of pirated and pornographic film materials was recently conducted in the Ikeja, Lagos metropolis amid applause.
The Executive secretary of LSFVCB, Otunba Dayo Awobotu who made the disclosure at a recent briefing organized by both regulatory bodies, said all culprits would be made to face prosecution, adding that they have resolved to reduce piracy, which is the biggest problem plaguing the film industry in Lagos State and by extension, Nigeria, to its barest minimum.

Also speaking, Mr. Obiora Chukwumba, SA to the DG of the NFVCB, Mr. Emeka Mba, while commending the Lagos State government for their cooperation, stated that the Board’s involvement in the collaboration with Lagos State was borne out of their belief in the idea that government at every level have to work together and share responsibilities.
He said the newly introduced Classification Label by the Board would play a vital role in fighting piracy as every legitimate work is expected to carry the seal.
To ensure the successful operation of the collaboration between the two agencies, two committees, the supervisory and implementation committees with members equally drawn from both organizations have been set up to be in charge of monitoring and enforcement.
Otunba Awobotu, who disclosed this also said that the Lagos State government has the intention to introduce the issue of filming license in the state, which is a practice obtainable all over the world, stressing that it is wrong for filmmakers to go to any state in the world and start shooting without first obtaining a license.
It would be recalled that both agencies had last year signed an MOU to jointly regulate the film industry in Lagos State.
