Shame: Fayose inherits empty treasury, N57 billion debts as he resumes

Fayose

Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, renowned to have defeated two incumbent governors at two elections, assumed office on Thursday, but met with an empty treasury and N57Bn debt.
Fayose had in 2003 defeated then governor of the state, Otunba Niyi Adebayo and in June this year, routed another incumbent, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, with the returns showing that Fayemi lost in all 16 local government areas of the state.

The governor, whose inauguration was witnessed by hundreds of thousands of Ekiti indigenes, political supporters and well-wishers, was at his best element as he colourfully danced on the dais of Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado Ekiti.
The governor assured the people of the state that he will be ‘governor of your imagination’, and that ‘I will live for you’.
He said: “My good people of Ekiti State, I left over N10 billion (in liquid cash and securities) in this state in October 2006 alongside all the monumental infrastructural and human developments that were emplaced during my first coming. “This huge sum was depleted by the quasi-military
emergency government that was foisted on our people by a power hungry cabal which masterminded and supervised my ouster. All the governments that forced themselves on the good people of Ekiti since I left office in 2006, including the out-gone cloned democrats, served every interest other than that of the ordinary Ekiti people.
“My heart bleeds today as I report to you, that our state had been plunged into a heavy debt dungeon of over forty nine billion naira by our own brothers and sisters as follows:
(i) Bond (Capital market) and Agric Loan – N21.2b
ii) Other Bank Loans – N15.5b
(iii) Outstanding, Salary (two months) – N3.2b
iv) Unremitted monthly deductions from salary (4 months) – N2.4b
(v) Unpaid Subventions to Parastatals and Tertiary Institutions – N700m
(vi) 2014 Leave Bonus – N400m
(vii) Unpaid Pensions and Gratuities -N3.2b
(viii) Unremitted withholding taxes and other deductions -N850m
(ix)Indebtedness to Contractors – NIO.Ob
Total = N57.45P
“The position of monthly accruable incomes (net) to Ekiti State is as follows:
(I) Statutory Allocation from the FG – 2.3b
(ii)Value Added Tax (VAT) – 650m
(iii) Internally Generated Revenue – 350m
3.300b
“Today our state has been committed financially up and until year 2020, even beyond my own administration. The proportionate benefits of this huge debt profile to our people remain to be seen or felt by the ordinary man and woman in our state.”
Fayose appealed to the media to be objective in the reportage of government activities to ensure peace and development.
He also appealed to the people of the state to cooperate with his government to move the state forward.
“We shall continue with the people-oriented programmes, rekindle and restore people’s hope and create an enabling environment for the development of the state.”
Fayose of PDP won the June 21, governorship polls with 203,090 votes, defeating the incumbent governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, who scored 120,433 votes.
Various cultural associations, musical groups, such as Yinka Ayefele, the Nupe cultural troop known as Igunu and other Yoruba groups at the occasion added colour to the occasion.
In his short address, the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, called on other members of the state assembly to come over to the PDP.
Muazu said the party would take “very good care of you.”
Muazu, who described Fayose’s new office as “herculean task”, said he was optimistic that God will come to his aid.
The PDP national chairman said: “The people of Ekiti State have spoken.
“We thank You, God.
“He needs your support and prayers and collaboration to deliver very good dividends of democracy.”
Dignitaries at the ceremony included PDP national executive committee members, led by Muazu; PDP governors, led by the Chairman of the party’s Governors’ Forum, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State; Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko; ex-Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; former Governor Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Alaka; the Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro; members of the Board of Trustees of the PDP; Prof. Tunde Adeniran; Senator Teslim Folarin; Ambassador Jolaade Onipede; traditional rulers; and religious leaders.
Other governors at the occasion were those of Katsina, Jigawa, Delta, Kebbi, Kaduna, Abia and Cross River States; the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Adewale Omirin; members of the PDP in Ekiti State, led by its Chairman, Makanjuola Ogundipe; market leaders; the mother of the governor, Pastor Oluwatoyosi Fayose; ministers; and serving and former lawmakers from the state and National Assembly.
Meanwhile, at the swearing-in ceremony, six lawmakers in the state House of Assembly defected to the People’s Democratic Party.
The defectors were Olowo Ajiboye (Oye Two), Adeloye Adeyinka (Ikole One), Abeni Olayinka (Ado Two), Fatunbi Olajide (Moba Two), Olugbemi Joseph (Ikole One) and Adeojo Felix Ayodele (Ekiti South West Two).
They all belong to the All Progressives Congress. With the defection, PDP now has seven members in the House, out of the 26-member assembly.
