It's been a tough year for Giuliana Rancic, after the drama
surrounding the Oscars Fashion Police episode
.
And on Wednesday the 40-year-old
star announced she would be lightening her load a bit, by stepping down from
her role as host of E! News on August 10.
'For more than a decade, I was
fortunate enough to play a role in the success of E! News and will miss my
family at the show,' she said in a statement released by the network.
Giuliana - who will remain a co-host of Fashion Police and Live from the Red Carpet - continued: 'At the same time, I am excited to not only continue as host of two major franchises on E! but also executive produce the aspirational new show Rich in Faith for Oxygen as well as take my wine and clothing lines to the next level.'
'This is such a thrilling time
for me and I thank the gang at E! for understanding my desire to embark on this
next chapter in my life.'
The announcement comes a few
months after the TV personality was accused of making a racist comment about
Zendaya Coleman's hair at the Oscars, which later prompted a spat with co-host
Kelly Osbourne, who then quit Fashion Police.
Giuliana had said that Zendaya's hair looked as though it 'smelt of patchouli oil or weed' on the Oscars special episode and Kelly later threatened to quit the show after a wave of controversy ensued.
Following the joke, Zendaya said
that the comments were 'not only a large stereotype but outrageously
offensive,' and Kelly demanded that an apology be made to the star, who is also
a personal friend.
Giuliana issued an apology on
Twitter, writing, 'I'm sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a
bohemian chic look. Had nothing to do with race and NEVER would!!!'
She followed up with an on-air
apology the next day, which Zendaya accepted.
Despite the apology, Kelly quit
the show, with Joan Rivers' replacement Kathy Griffin next to exit, which
caused many to speculate that show might get pulled. But in April Giuliana
confirmed she would be back in September with Brad Goreski.
E! then announced in June that
Melissa Rivers would join Giuliana and Brad as a co-host, stepping into a role
once held by her late mother Joan Rivers.
'I think more than ever, [Fashion
Police] is definitely coming back, because [the controversy] shows that a lot
of people were watching the show and enjoyed the show,' Giuliana said in April.
'So yeah, it's coming back in September, in time for the Emmys.'
The star also suffered a devastating personal loss when she and husband Bill Rancic learned in January that their surrogate had miscarried their last remaining embryo, as told to People.
She also told the publication in
April that the couple were planning on moving to Chicago full-time for the sake
of their three-year-old son Duke.
The couple had previously
commuted back and forth from husband Bill's hometown to New York City for work
and to do their reality show Giuliana and Bill.
However, Giuliana told the
publication: 'Up until now, Duke's been on our schedule. But he starts school
at the end of summer and we want him to have a connection with schoolmates and
not be going from city to city.'
Giuliana will host her last
episode of E! News on August 10.
