The nation’s film industry otherwise known as Nollywood was agog recently when the news filtered in that one of its top stars and veteran actor, Ejike Asiegbu, has finally returned to action, starring in a big budget movie, after some  years of sabbatical.

SHOWBIZPLUSNG, learnt that the movie, an initiative of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), is being directed by fellow actor Desmond Elliot.

There is palpable excitement in Nollywood as the city of London prepares to host this year’s edition of the annual ZAFAA Global awards amid glitz and grandeur.

This year’s event, a three-day affair, SHOWBIZPLUSng exclusively gathered has been scheduled to begin on Thursday, November 6 and climaxes on Saturday, 8, with the awards night at the deluxe Grange Hotel, St. Paul.

The duo of Klint Da Drunk and Princess Deun will anchor this year’s gathering.
It will be preceded by a business/investment forum, youth education and empowerment seminar at
the BFI Imax.

Meanwhile, the nomination party is expected to hold in Nigeria this October.

Mbaka rubbishes Okorocha, insists Gov gave church N50m dud cheque

The public embarrassment coming the way of embattled Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha seems to be over.

Few weeks after maverick entertainer, Charly Boy disgraced him publicly at his dad’s burial, Okorocha has again come under fire as fiery Catholic cleric, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, recently accused him of giving a N50 million dud cheque to the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace, Dr. Anthony J.V. Obinna.

SHOWBIZPLUSng gathered that Mbaka told the congregation that Okorocha allegedly gave the dud cheque when the Archbishop wanted to re-roof Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri, that was leaking then.

“A lot of funny things are happening in Imo State now. Workers are sacked with impunity. Governor Okorocha gave the Archbishop a N50 million cheque that bounced and this is supposed to be a Catholic”, Rev. Fr. Mbaka said.

Little action has been taken to clean up pollution caused by oil production in the Niger Delta region, either by the government or Shell Oil, Amnesty International and other groups have said in a report obtained by SHOWBIZPLUSng.

Oil production has contaminated the drinking water of at least 10 communities in the Ogoniland area but neither the government nor Royal Dutch Shell’s Nigeria subsidiary has taken effective measures to restore the fouled environment, according to the new report by Amnesty International, Friends of The Earth Europe; Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development; Environmental Rights Action, and Platform, according to a report by The Associated Press.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has not yet responded to a request by the Associated Press for reaction to the critical report.

Ebola: Panic as Nigerian doctor who treated Liberian patient is infected with virus

 Minister of Health, Dr. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Monday explained that the medical doctor who carried out treatment on the late Patrick Sawyer, who died of Ebola virus on July 25, has exhibited symptoms of the deadly disease.

He, however, said the Federal Government had not been able to confirm whether the medical doctor has actually been infected with the disease

He said a total of 70 Nigerians who came in contact with the late Sawyer, including two other medical personnel who treated him, had been quarantined and placed under surveillance.

Succour on the way as research says bitter kola may cure Ebola

 A plant has been found to halt the deadly Ebola virus in its tracks in laboratory tests, scientists have said.

They used a compound from Garcinia kola (bitter kola), a plant commonly eaten in West Africa. Compounds from the plant have also proved effective against some strains of flu.

If the anti-Ebola compound proves successful in animal and human trials, it will be the first medicine to successfully treat the virus that causes Ebola haemorrhagic fever - an often-fatal condition.

The discovery was announced at the 16th International Botanical Congress in St Louis in the US.

Four deaths per five cases

The Ebola virus was first documented in 1976 after an outbreak in Zaire - now the Democratic Republic of the Congo - where 88% of the 318 human cases died.
