Another
sad news from the Nigerian banking sector. Gunmen in
the early hours of Wednesday attacked the Automated Teller Machine of a branch
of the United Bank for Africa on Ajilosun area of Ado Ekiti, carting away an
undisclosed amount of money.
It was learnt that a life was lost in
the attack. But the Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, who confirmed the
attack said no life was lost in the attack.
An eyewitness said he saw when a
lifeless body in front of the bank was being conveyed to the morgue but could
not say whether the victim was a staff or a customer of the bank who came to
withdraw from the ATM.
Customers who went for transactions on
Wednesday were turned back as the bank shut its door.
Lakanu told journalists on the
telephone that the bank was attacked around 2am on Wednesday and that one of
the attackers had been arrested and was helping the Police in investigation.
The Police boss added that the Police
had launched an investigation, promising that the culprits would be arrested.
There was no official comment from the
bank as of press time.
Many banks in the state capital
hurriedly shut their doors as the news filtered into town.
Customers, who spoke to journalists
lamented incessant attacks on banks in the state while calling on the
government to address the problem.
On October 31, a 30-man gang armed
robbers had attacked a branch of the First Bank in Ifaki-Ekiti.
On November 24, two policemen and two
others, including a female corps member, were killed in another robbery of a
branch of the bank in Ikere-Ekiti.
