Sterling Bank MD, Rasak Adeola |
It was a
scene of chaos and pandemonium recently when some angry Bayelsa State youths
went berserk and destroyed some parts of the building housing a branch of
Sterling Bank Plc in the state.
In fact, the
timely arrival of armed policemen from the State’s Police Command prevented the
rampaging youths from setting ablaze the embattled bank’s premises alongside
staff and customers already transacting business inside the troubled building.
SHOWBIZPLUS
reliably learnt that trouble started when the management of the bank told the
youths that the Subsidy Re-Investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) fund
meant for them had been cancelled.
Meanwhile,
the aggressive and expectant youths had earlier stormed the bank and told the
management that they had been directed to the bank to open accounts to enable
them benefit from SURE-P largesse.
The bank’s
management also committed a financial blunder by earlier designing a form and
directing the youths to open an emergency account tagged Kia Kia Account with
N1,000, prior to the crisis, while still waiting for confirmation from its
headquarters and the SURE-P office in Abuja.
Sadly, the
clash reached a crescendo upon confirmation from its headquarters as well as
the SURE-P office in Abuja that there was no scheme for the already agitated
youths.
The youths
went on rampage immediately the bank’s management broke the ugly news to them.
“If not for
the quick intervention of armed policemen deployed to the bank’s premises, the
rampaging youths who already had gallons of fuel with them would have set the
bank ablaze”, disclosed an eyewitness.
Also
confirming the embarrassing incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of
Bayelsa Command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said it was true the bank issued the youths
forms and asked them to open accounts.
“The youths
threw stones and damaged vehicles,” Akhigbe stated.
The Managing
Director of Sterling Bank Plc is Rasak Adeola.
