Defending his use of hard substances, the vocalist explains that sometimes he gets writer's block which he just can't get past by remaining sober
The Weeknd admits to using recreational drugs to overcome writer's block in a recent interview he granted The Guardian UK.
"When I had nothing to do but make music, It was very heavy. 'Drugs were a crutch for me," he told the Guardian.
The 'Starboy' revealed it was a habit he picked up during his early days of making music, and while he was away from home, not having a father or a father figure to perhaps have put him in check, being raised by his single mother.
The R&B singer however mentioned that he wasn't so keen on returning to the act - that saw some drug-induced rambling on some of the songs off "Kissland" his first album released in 2013 while creating his "Starboy" album.
"There were songs on my first record that were seven minutes long, rambling – whatever thoughts I was having when I was under the influence at the time.
‘I can’t see myself doing that now," the singer said.
However, the 'Earned it' crooner seemed to contradict his statements afterwards when he said he still takes to drugs whenever he hits a creative brickwall.
"I'll be completely honest with you, the past couple of albums, I do get back to that," he said.
Even on this album, you have writer's block, and sometimes you're like "I can't do this sober."
The singer said once his creative juices start flowing again, the drugs stop, but he's not sure if he can completely avoid them.
"Right now, I feel in control, he said. Where it takes me after, I don't know." gurdianuk.com
