Fear, anger in Rivers as State is rated highest in HIV/AIDS...6,300 infected daily

The recent shocking disclosure by the federal government that governor Rotimi Amaechi-led Rivers State has the highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the country with a prevalence rate of 15.2 per cent, is already eliciting fears and causing panic in Rivers State. The federal government disclosed  this when it released the 2012 national HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health Survey-Plus, which also indicated that Nigeria now has HIV prevalence rate of 3.4 per cent. The annual survey was conducted to monitor the HIV/AIDS epidemic among the country's population, it also monitors other sexual and reproductive health indicators.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, while speaking at an event to mark the recently held World AIDS Day, disclosed that 6,300 people are daily infected with HIV/AIDS, in the country. He further added that almost 40 per cent of those affected were young people between the ages of 15 and 24.
A reliable insider who spoke with SHOWBIZPLUS hinted that the Rivers State government, has been reacting angrily since the report was made public.
