Sodimu drops new singles, hooks Wayne Wonder

As you’re reading this, chances are that you could also be listening to the newly released singles entitled: Afro Soul, from Seyi Sodimu, the Mr. Jeje crooner.
US based Sodimu, who now spends more time in Nigeria, is currently in town to promote the new singles, which according to him will hit the airwaves this week.
Speaking with some entertainment journalists over the weekend, in his Ikeja, Lagos residence, the musician cum international businessman, said he’s privileged to be a Nigerian musician and that music runs in his family.
Still baring his mind on the singles and the Nigerian music industry, the act who described his kind of music as Afro Soul, said he combines it with African rhythm, so that it would have a global appeal as well as be globally accepted by his teeming fans.
Sodium, whose debut effort was released in 1997, hinted that the latest singles, which full album would be ready and subsequently launched in the next couple of weeks, is his fourth as an accomplished entertainer and international act. Containing a total of four tracks, including: Gbedu, Boys Will Be Boys, Sophisticated Woman, featuring Wayne Wonder, and Set Me Free. Sodimu, also hinted that work had already begun on the video of Boys Will be Boys with Clarence Peters. “Several of my colleagues in the music, movie and comedy sectors would feature in this video, which is expected to hit air soon. Other videos will follow suit once we are through with this one. We intend touring Nigeria with several leading acts soon. We also intend having a massive album launch here in Nigeria when the full album is ready as well as help up and coming acts, in a talent hunt we are also packaging”.
Sodium, who repeatedly confessed that music is part of his life, also featured his 12 year-old daughter in the new singles and hopes to begin serious collaboration works with most Nigerian acts, whom he also praised for helping to raise the bar in the industry.
Aside singing and writing songs, the act who shuttles between Washington DC, where he has a home and Nigeria, is also into movies, clothing and oil and gas. Visibly excited Sodimu also promised to be more visible in the Nigerian music scene, unlike in the past that he used to breeze in once in a while.


X-Project storms studio for another hit




Multiple award winning group X-Project, which is made up of Akinwoye Akinwunmi (Majeed), Salieu Sindi (Saal) and Aziz Kamara (Slez), is currently back in the studios putting finishing touches to their latest album, in Abuja.
The forthcoming work, a follow up to ‘Lorile’, their monster hit party jam, which is still ruling the music world, would be the fourth from the very talented group made up of two Sierra Leoneans and one Nigerian. Little wonder they are also known as Sierra/Naija project.
The work, according to the trio who are on the label of Sam Kargbo Productions (SKP), would definitely be bigger and better than Lorile, in terms of acceptance and production input. “We have been in Abuja for months working on this project with equally good producers like: OJB, Puffy T and some others. We also did some collabos on this project with some top musicians: In fact, we have recorded over 15 tracks for this project. The work is coming out this year with a big bang; it is for our fans the world over and all music lovers. It is a project very dear to our hearts and we intend launching it big in both Nigeria and Sierra-Leone as well as other countries within and outside our continent” disclosed Majeed, the leader of the very focused group. Also sharing his aspirations for the boys, with us, the boss of SKP, who is also the financier and promoter of the group, said he brought them from Lagos to Abuja, in order to work without stress in the
studios as well as give the job the attention it needed. Kargbo also a lawyer, further added that they have so far impressed him with the content they have in the forthcoming album.
Amiable Kargbo, who also discovered and nurtured the group to this level, further maintained that X-Project has truly come to stay on the nation’s music landscape and would continue to dominate the scene with their kind of music and stagecraft.
Kargbo, whose dream for the group is for them to bring home a Grammy someday, said he was excited when they came back with an award, from their recent tour of the U.S.
Aside carting home several awards in Nigeria since their emergence on the scene almost a decade ago, the group were also rewarded with a Special Award, a few years ago, by the former President of Sierra Leone, Mr. Ahmed Tejan Kabbah, for their efforts in helping to restore peace to the then troubled country through their music. We would definitely keep you posted on more developments about the coming work and when it would be released in Nigeria and the international market for their teeming fans.


Emem Isong on the march again



Respected and celebrated female filmmaker Emem Isong is set to kill three birds (not two) with just one stone. And since she is a member of the make believe world, the above scenario could only happen in Nolloywood, now the world’s second largest filmmaking nation.
After a long wait, Isong and her partners; Desmond Elliot and Uduak Oguamana, are poised to dazzle movie buffs with their latest film projects. Already, Edikan, an Ibibio language film she jointly produced with the above two, would be premiered on July 10, in her native Akwo-Ibom State and later, Lagos State, the US and UK, amid splendour and pizzazz. In the words of Isong, the film thematically centres on the issue of child witchcraft and its effect on the victims as well as the society.
Meanwhile, Before The Light, a Christian movie jointly produced by Isong and Elliot, is also expected to hit shelves same July, with the sole aim of winning more souls for Christ.
“Edikan is a movie after my heart because of its plot and sub plots and what the society, especially my State stands to gain and learn from it. I’m also using this opportunity to implore my State Government Akwa-Ibom, to partner with us on this movie by using it as an advocacy tool round the State. It’s the first Ibibio language movie to openly treat and thoroughly dissect the issue of child witchcraft and its effect on the society. We can do more of these language movies, but that can only happen if government supports and shares in our visions as film makers”.
In another development, Isong, further disclosed that she has concluded plans to formally open her long awaited Nollywood training school. To be known as Royal Arts Academy, she posited that when opened in the next couple of weeks, the institute would train aspiring Nollywood stars as well as those who intend working behind the scenes.
“ We have made all the necessary arrangements towards the smooth take-off the institute. We are only waiting for signals and the arrival of some of the state-of-the-art equipment from our foreign partners. As soon as they are here, we would immediately take-off. Our aim is to help empower Nigerian youths through entertainment.”



Koko Mansion begins audition



After a long wait, which according to the organizers was worth the while, audition into the television reality show, Koko Mansion, will now hold this week in Lagos. Already, there is so much excitement in the air as the potential Kokolettes (ladies) that have registered, are looking forward to the ‘show’ before the show. Three judges and a celebrity judge will be in the panel that will carry out the video audition.
There is palpable tension among the hundreds of girls that the 12 finalists will emerge from.
Koko Mansion, is a reality television show featuring D’banj and being facilitated by HiTV, the wholly Nigerian pay Television Company. Koko Mansion revolves around the quest of 12 beautiful, and talented girls that will live in a mansion for eight weeks, with one of them finally becoming the ideal Kokolette (wife). The Mansion is situated in an undisclosed area in Lagos. Hip hop superstar D’banj will play a vital role in the coming show that has the support of Nigerian Breweries, Jagal Group, makers of Tetmosol among other sponsors. It is scheduled to begin this month.
In these weeks, the young women will be groomed and tested in various activities in order to determine the one with the greatest Koko Virtues, worthy of being a wife –a Kokolette. The winner will among other benefits, be crowned Kokolette 1, get a Chris Aires Diamond ring, a brand new convertible car, feature in his next music video, You Don Make Me Fall In Love alongside N5 million in cash. Again, the winner will be D’Banj’s companion at public events both within and outside Nigeria. She would further emerge as HiTV’s Hi-Babe.
Meanwhile, aside the huge revenue being used in the production of Koko Mansion, critics of the entertainment sector are applauding the initiative as one that will create employment for many people.
The winner of the show aside the mouth-watering prizes, the organizers have also made a commitment to invest in whatever talent she has that was discovered during the duration of the show.
Hip-hop star D’Banj, on his part said part of the agreement he reached with the organizers, was to assist the young lady develop her talent. “If it turns out that she is a good singer, Mo’ Hits Records (a label owned by Don Jazzy) will not have a choice other than to take her in and make her the superstar she has desired to be all her life.” This goes for all the participants to prove that a Kokolette is not a street girl or party music video girl as most people may want to misrepresent.
Most people for some time now, have said one of the reasons behind Koko Mansion is to shop for a female singer in the Mo’ Hits all men crew. “It is not entirely correct,” D’Banj said, adding: “But a female singer in Mo’ Hits is not a bad idea, and if she happens to be the number one Kokolette from the Koko Mansion, why not?”
It is however laughable to think that the organizers are also looking for a wife for D’Banj.

New generation actress and debutante clothier Adaora Ukoh, is brimming with ideas in this New Year.
In the next couple of weeks, Divas Dynasty, the new TV programme, she is poised to present would be making a debut on network stations. Aimed at celebrating the real and successful African woman, Ukoh is optimistic; the programme would further elevate and reposition her acting career.
Busty and very single, Ukoh, who joined Nollywood in ’97, is also ready with her clothing line in this New Year, and hopes to organize a nationwide fashion show to herald its formal launch.
Speaking with Daily Sun, in her first interview for the year, the Lawyer turned entertainer shared most of her plans and prospects, as well as other creative ventures that would be keeping her busy round the year.


Good to see you in this New Year, we would like to know most of your plans and ideas?


Thank so much my brother, I just returned from the East brimming with many laudable initiatives and ideas. However, two major things are on my shelf this 2009. First, is working on my TV show, Divas Dynasty, it is aimed at celebrating real successful women. It would also serve as medium to encourage the younger generation to work harder in their chosen careers. It is hitting the airwaves soon. Second, is my clothing label, Couture De’ Adaora. It is basically a new clothing line for women who are not only big, but also plus sized women that are extremely confident of themselves and what they wear.


We would also like to know more about Diva’s Dynasty?

It may further interest you to know that Diva’s Dynasty, is a production of Citi Vendors Integrated Services, with head office in London. It’s a programme that celebrates women and their positive achievements. It will also tell their stories, challenges, trials and triumphs, thus placing them side by side with their male counterparts. The programme would also inspire, strengthen and empower the African woman. It will also have a humanitarian side by being ready to work with several NGO’s towards the empowerment of less privileged women in our society. Ngozi Kanu, is the producer and we have a very dedicated team on ground.


What are the new ideas you think would differentiate this programme from others currently running on air?


Several unique concepts would definitely separate us from the maddening crowd. We are also out to help most females already drowning in the pool of prostitution and other dirty acts. This and many more, which we would provide periodically, will stand us out from the crowd.



So far, how has it been combining acting with Law?

I’m okay with both, though; I have not started practicing Law, but don’t think I
will dump one for the other. Maybe, in the nearest
future, I intend going into entertainment law, so that
I can help protect the intellectual works of my
colleagues and even mine too.


Aren’t you perturbed about your single status, in this New Year?


Why would I be? Besides, I’m not absolutely single,
currently seeing someone and we are already talking
marriage gradually. By His grace, I’m walking down the
aisle this 2009.


Do men still stare at your sexy figure and boobs?

Yeah! They still do that a lot, even in this New Year.


You are a fashionable actress, what defines your style
and dress sense?


For me, the style defines the woman in you and stands
you out. And whatever I put on depends on my mood and
where I’m going at a particular time.


What are the idiosyncrasies that will change about you this 2009?


Let me answer that question first, by describing
myself. Adaora Ukoh, is an easygoing person and very hardworking too, full of ideas and ready to move on with her life. Maybe, the things that did not favour me last year, I will do away with them this 2009. And please do not ask me, because they are very personal to me.


So, how does if feel like to be back in Nollywood this New Year?

Well, it feels real good to be back
among my colleagues this 2009. It is good to be an actress in Nollywood too.




But your parents kicked against your going into acting
then?

My late dad didn’t really like it but my mum was just
indifferent, she had no reservations about it. Dad
wanted me out, but then I just had to keep keeping on,
especially on what you want and not what people want
for you. But I’m happy that before his demise he
actually allowed me to be.



Why not tell us a bit about your love life this 2009?

I don’t want to talk about my affair in public. I
don’t think he would like me going public with our
romance on the pages of newspapers.


What strategies have you devised to use in coping with Nigerian men, especially the ones
that want to date you, in this New Year?


I must not tell you my secret; it’s a personal thing. No
doubt about the fact that they will keep disturbing me, but
every man has the right to woo a girl. Another factor
is your attitude towards men. Men woo me every now and
then. I’m used to it. Some of them are real while some
are spurious.



Looking back, do you feel bad about some of your past affairs?

No! I’ve never felt bad and won’t feel bad. I’m not
the first; neither will I be the last to fall out of a
relationship. Again over the years, I now have inner
eyes to identify and differentiate real people from
the fake ones. For me, no hard feelings for my broken
affairs, I’ve always advised my pals to let go any
relationship that do not favour them. Sisters should
always move on with their lives, no matter what
happens.


Do you still believe in love?

Yes, I do believe in love so much and very romantic.
When I see a romantic man it makes me very romantic.
Like I always tell my pals, a real man will bring out
the real you. And the relationship will only flow when
the two of you tango very well. Every relationship
needs commitment and communication.


Like how many movies do you intend featuring in this 2009?

For now, I cannot say, but I know its definitely going to be a very busy year for me. Mind you, nothing good comes easy, for
me, it started like a journey of a thousand miles,
which began with just one step. The attitude to life
that makes one a winner, is when you expect challenges
and know that you have chosen to overcome these
challenges. It makes you a better person. For me, a
challenge makes one a better person for the future,
how do you strive hard when you don’t go through them.
Aside acting and presenting, I will also dedicate time to my clothing line this year. I also do make-ups for my pals occasionally.


What other goals do you want to achieve this year and possibly in the not too distant future?


I’ve always prayed to God to make me the best in my
chosen careers. I see myself getting to the top of my
career in the nearest future and not coming down from
that top position till I leave the stage. I want to be
seen as a focused actress who has done so well for
herself and Nollywood. I want to be celebrated as an
artiste, lawyer, clothier and presenter globally.

Who are the great minds that have not stopped inspiring you?

On the foreign scene, I’m still down with Whoopi Goldberg
and Queen Latifat, I see a bit of me in her. I also
love Monique; they are there and representing even
with their weights. Coming home, I love Joke Silva and
Onyeka Onwenu, I look up to them a lot as role models
and source of inspirations.


Are there regrets to share with us?


Not really! I’ve learnt to love and accept myself the way I am. And what I choose to do, I did because I
wanted to do it. So, in essence, I’m always ready, to
face the consequences resulting from my actions.

If given the opportunity, what major thing would you
love to do for humanity, especially in this 2009?

Sincerely, I would love to change the face of Nigeria,
especially corruption and the suffering masses whose
faces I see around me everyday. I also want to help
the destitute, we should heal this country and empower
the youths, we are the future whether the leaders like
it or not. Change is the new face of the world and Nigeria must embrace it now.

Do you see Nollywood embracing this change?

Nollywood is growing and has done well for itself and
the practitioners. It is a fast growing industry that
is making Nigeria proud globally and has also imbibed and embraced the culture of change.

You must have taken several bold steps in your
youthful life, which among them would you say remains the
boldest?

For me, the boldest step was standing firm and going
back to the university to fulfill my dad’s wish to
read Law. He was already dead when I got an admission
to read Law. My ambition as a kid was to read Banking
and Finance, but my dad wanted Law. So, I’m happy
reading his dream course, but very sad that he was not
around to see me graduate. I’m glad he made me read
Law despite my stubbornness. I know that he would be
happy and fulfilled with me wherever he is now.

The grand gathering held amid glitz last Sunday night, in collaboration with the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN.
From veteran broadcaster and arts patriarch, Ambassador Segun Olusola, to highlife music promoter Chief Femi Eso, and even Nollywood/music stars like: Zack Orji, Charles Inojie, Ejike Asiegbu, Chidi Nwokeabia, Emeka Enyiocha, Ras Kimono, D’banj and many others, they all agreed that Toyin Subair, has done the nation proud with his modest achievement of setting up a proudly Nigerian pay TV station.
HiTV’s joint initiative with D’banj, Koko Mansion, also received kudos and endorsements from all the celebrities as well as top personalities gathered at O’jez that lovely evening. Billed to begin soon, Koko Mansion is a reality television show featuring D’banj and being facilitated by HiTV. Ambassador Olusola described Subair as a “young and resilient Nigerian who has done the nation proud.”
As the oldest in the gathering, he prayed God to give him (Subair) more strength to achieve more successes in life.
Amadi Ogbonna, Group Entertainment Editor, Vanguard newspapers, showered encomiums on Subair, even as he traced his success story from when he was involved in active legal practice.
The distinguished guest revealed he was humbled by the show of love. He said HiTV was set up sorely as “a catalyst. We wanted to prove that Nigerians can own and effectively run a pay TV as against the disinformation being passed by many people outside.”
He said plans have being concluded in the United States, Africa, France and some parts of Europe, to get HiTV signals. “We are grateful about that, because we are out to sell Nigeria positively to the world, our purely Nigerian channels, Hi Nolly, Nigezie are what the world will see and view us from a different perspective. We are not promoting immorality.
Ejike Asiegbu, president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria reiterated the guild’s support for HiTV and Koko Mansion “because it is a Nigerian company and Koko Mansion is something fresh, that we are all looking forward to.”
D’banj further lit up the venue with a refreshing performance, alongside the Evergreen band that also dished out melodious highlife tunes.

Kate Henshaw, others dine with orphans

Former AMAA best actress on the continent, Mrs. Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, was among the few celebs in tinsel town that celebrated with children during the recently held Children’s Day. The delectable actress and Onga ambassador used her face and position to donate the company’s products, to five orphanages, at the second edition of the needy inclined programme tagged: They Are Stars. The event, which was put together by Avenue 3, a brands building firm, was a fun filled time for the children of select orphanages in Lagos, among them, Love on the Street (LOTS) project and Little Saints home.
The event could also be best described as a loving and caring moment, as Henshaw and other celebs were seen hugging, cuddling and playing games with the kids, most of whom are physically challenged.
Among the guests, consisting celebrities from the entertainment and media industries were: Bimbo Akintola, Chioma Chukwuka, Wale Adebayo, Amstel Malta Box Office (AMBO) winner, O.C Ukeje and Idol West Africa’s Omawumi and Eric. Others include: Frank Edoho, Mode 9, Djinee, Segun Obe and Kalu Ikeagwu.


Film on Isaac Boro on the way


In the spirit of further strengthening and propagating the Niger Delta cause, Icon Multimedia Limited, owned by youthful Ijaw born comedian and entertainer, Jeff Botimi Amusu, popularly known as Talkative, is poised to shoot a movie on the life and times of Isaac Adaka Boro, the late revolutionist from the troubled region.
Already, Talkative and his team at Icon Multimedia with offices in Bayelsa and Lagos States respectively, are currently discussing with their foreign partners from Hollywood, US and South Africa, in the areas of production equipment as well as technical support. “No doubt, it’s our story, which we have also researched properly on, but our aim is to have this movie shot by international filmmakers.

We want it so because we do not want to compromise on standards, which is our priority for the project,” maintained Mr. Kelvin Ebivwiere, the outfit’s vice president.
Also speaking on why he is documenting the life and times of late Boro, who is regarded as the father of genuine and modern day struggle for the emancipation of the people of the Niger Delta region, Amusu, has this to say: “Sincerely, having read so much about Boro, in the course of my researches on this project, as well as my interactions with his immediate and extended family members, it immediately dawned on me that he was not the kind of person, many people were mistaking him to be. Boro was a brilliant young man filled with the passion to restore freedom and expunge oppression from our region, but unfortunately, he was not allowed to complete his God given mandate on earth, before he was killed in his prime. Mind you, while fighting for our collective good, he never engaged in hostage taking, kidnapping and illegal bunkering. Together with his followers, they fought for freedom in the Niger Delta with a high level of diplomacy and caution”.
Continuing, Amusu posited that when completed the big budget movie would further reveal to the world, the stuff Boro was made of, adding that it would be an insightful flick chronicling his childhood to his eventual death.
Several leading names in Nollywood would also star in the movie, which is expected to be supported by some Niger Delta State governors as well as some well-meaning individuals from the region. When completed the flick would be premiered to a global audience within and outside Nigeria.


Deraco production fixes nationwide audition


For all the intending actors, actresses and musicians seeking to become famous in the nation’s entertainment landscape via the Deraco Production talent hunt search; this is another cheering news. After several months of planning and fine-tuning arrangements, the organizers have finally rolled out a nationwide audition timetable. According to Chief Edwin Oragwam, the honcho of the outfit, the first set of auditions for actors/actresses holds in Lagos on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, in Surulere, Lagos, while that of musicians follows suit the next day, same location. The Abuja audition for acting and singing holds on Wednesday and Thursday, June 24 and 25 respectively, at Zone 7.

Queenikky, models show some love


Children and staff of the Surulere, Lagos based Heart of Gold Children Hospice were recently treated to a scintillating Children’s Day party/special visit by Queen Lott Onu and her bevy of models from Queenikky modeling agency. Also on her entourage was pretty Miss Amanda Onwudilo, the current winner of the recently held Face of Queenikky beauty pageant, as well as the two runners up and the other contestants.

Aside donating cash and several gift items, Queenikky and her team, also came with a popular disc jockey, who spent several hours dishing out good music to the admiration of the elated children and the staff. The groovy visit climaxed with the dancing competition organized by Onu and her models, for the inmates, who kept asking for more fun.
Speaking on the rationale behind the visit, Onu, hinted that the need to show love to the less privileged as well as to formally unveil her foundation, were the reasons for the visit. She further promised to do more for the needy in the society through her Queenikky Foundation. “ This visit really touched my inner most part, and from this day, we have promised to make it an annual thing and to also breeze in once in a while, to say hi to the kids. Such children need love and attention, the sight of some of them brought tears to my eyes. We must continue to show love to them, no matter their fate or level of physical disability”. While responding, Mrs. Laja Adedoyin, the proprietress of the home, which was established in 2003, thanked Onu and her team for coming. She further promised to continue with her good works at the home.

GUS 6 berths with Horn of Valour

With a refreshingly new concept, the season six of the Gulder Ultimate Search (GUS), Nigeria’s foremost reality TV show has berthed with so many goodies for its youthful contestants. This year’s edition tagged: Horn of Valour, is expected to stretch man to the very limit of his endurance. Amazingly, it would be set within the undulating plains of the Omodo Forest, Ada, Osun State. In the words of Mr. Yusuf Ageni, the Corporate Affairs Adviser of Nigerian Breweries plc, proud sponsors of the hunt, during a recent media briefing, the search is not for the faint hearted. “It is believed that the secret message on the horn is the only solution that can change the destiny of the world. Hence, these men will battle against nature and wild life”.
Meanwhile, the daily highlights will be telecast beginning from July 18 to August 7, 2009, on national and satellite TV stations.

In fact, it was the constellation of stars recently when Barrister Emeka Etiaba, the governorship candidate of APGA in next year’s election in Anambra State hosted all the Nollywood screen personalities and filmmakers from the State, to a lavish dinner.
The well-attended event held amid glitz and blitz at the upscale Golden Gate Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos, with several captains of industry from the State, also in attendance.
Tagged: Next Level and beautifully anchored by top actor, Bob Manuel Udokwu with comedy from Klint D’ Drunk, both great sons of the State.
Speaking at the historic gathering, Mr. Etiaba, whose mother is the current deputy governor of the State, also called on all Nollywood practitioners from Anambra to support and work with him for the actualization of his dream of governing the State next year.
He further revealed that if elected, his administration would build a film village and other centres that would further boost entertainment activities in the State. He also promised to give priorities to health, education, agriculture, security, sports, clean environment and good network of roads. Amiable Etiaba, further added that it was time to move Anambra State to the next level and also allow it function effectively and efficiently, as the second most urbanized State in the federation.
The intimidating roll call from Nollywood include: Ngozi Ezeonu, Jennifer Eliogu, Oge Okoye, Charles Okafor, Ejike Metu, Larry Koldsweat, Zulu Adigwe, Ebere Okaro, Benita Nzeribe, Ernest Obi, Adaora Ukoh, Chinwe Egwuatu and Teco Benson. J-e-e-z! Despite the global financial crunch, more and more babies are still being sired in tinsel town. Just few weeks after the arrival of Obey Etuk’s baby boy, top actress Jennifer Eliogu, has followed suit, in the baby making competition currently rocking Nollywood. Her bundle of joy, we reliably gathered was delivered over the weekend, thus making her a mother of two. Also learnt that mother and the new boy are cool and already cuddling each other. Whao!
Also rejoicing and thanking the good Lord is the reigning Nigeria Music Award (NMA) best highlife musician, Ugo Stevenson. His amiable wife recently brought forth, a baby boy into their family, a fortnight ago. Mother and child are said to be in tip-top shape, in their Owerri, Imo State home.
In a related development, Stevenson, who is still basking in the euphoria of the new baby, is now poised for his long awaited show.

Gathered that heart broken Adeyinka, has even gone out of circulation because of the impact of what befell him.
But in order to bring him back to his jovial self, colleagues and friends, have been visiting to commiserate and cheer him up over the irreparable loss.
So, when next you see him looking forlorn and dejected, try and console him over the big loss.

Associates, friends and well-wishers came out en masse on Monday, May 25, 2009, to celebrate and rejoice with Ahmed Yerima, the Director General of the National Theatre/National Troupe of Nigeria, on the occasion of his 52nd birthday.
The colourful gathering, which held at the Cinema Hall 2, National Theatre, Lagos, also witnessed the presentation of his new book, Discourse On Tragedy, as well as the command performance of Mojagbe, which was directed by Otun Rasheed and performed by students of the Creative Arts department of University of Lagos.
The book, which was reviewed by Dr. Gbemisola Remi Adeoti, is an overview of the various definitions and studies on tragedy, it also probes deeply into classical and contemporary sources, such as: Aristotle, Sophocles, Arthur Miller, Bertolt Brecht, Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi, Zulu Sofola, Femi Osofisan and numerous others. In the words of Yerima, the book is a unique and timeless addition to the corpus of world dramatic literatures. “ It is a must read.”Ahmed Yerima, a man of many parts, is a playwright, dramatist and cultural administrator was born on
May 8, 1957. He trained at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), University College, Cardiff and the Royal Holloway and Bradford New College, England. Yerima who has acted, written and directed a number of plays, and also taught theatre studies at the University of Ife and the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria before his appointment into the National Troupe of Nigeria in 1991, first as Deputy Artistic Director and later in August 2000, as Artistic Director. Gbinigie plans grand burial for mum

Benin city, the capital of Edo State would be agog for a period of four days non-stop, courtesy of Mr. Ekhator Andrien Gbinigie, the patron of MORGON and other guilds in Nollywood, as he and his siblings get set to bury their late mother, Madam I.O. Gbinigie.
The carnival like burial/celebration of life, for their 86 year-old deceased mum, begins on June 11, and runs through 14, 2009, with several family, church and social activities geared towards giving their mother a befitting and memorable burial. According to the burial plan made available by bereaved Gbinigie and his eight other siblings sired by their late mum, a Christian wake keep would kick start the burial programme on Thursday, June 11, at 10. St. Stephen Street, Benin city. The Lying-In-State holds on Friday, June 12, between 3 and 10pm, same venue. The main event, (social outing), is expected to rock Benin and its environs on Saturday, June 13, at the indoor sports hall of Ogbe Stadium, between noon and 6pm. In the words of Gbinigie, the reception has been designed in such a way that guests could easily fly into Benin and take off same day, without much stress, due to the proximity of the venue to the airport. The final outing service, which
is mainly for the family, holds on Sunday, June 14, at the New Benin Baptist Church, thus bringing to an end, the four-day carnival like burial.
Reliable info at our disposal has it that the leadership of virtually all the guilds in Nollywood would be storming the burial in grand panache and intimidating ways. Already, the national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Mr. Ejike Asiegbu, has promised to lead a powerful delegation to the burial. “As one of our patrons, who has always stood by us and still standing by us, we will surely lead a powerful delegation to honour Mr. Gbinigie and his entire family at the event,” he stated.

The need for good governance and to further ensure a better representation at the home front, most Nollywood actors from Anambra State recently came together and happily launched the Association for Better Anambra in Nollywood (ABAN), with fanfare and accolades. Speaking at its recent formation, top filmmaker and the body’s interim national president, Mr. Obi Madubuogwu, said they ultimately seek to unite all Anambra people in Nollywood with the sole aim of helping to install good governance, especially now that election is just by the corner in the State. He further urged members to ensure that only the best candidate, who must also be entertainment inclined, emerges as the State’s governor, in next year’s governorship election. “As entertainers of repute, who also contributed immensely in the setting up of what is today known as Nollywood globally, we must begin to make meaningful impact and contributions concerning how our great State is
governed. We are tired of being spectators, we now want to be full participants and stakeholders, for a better Anambra through good governance.”
Also speaking, Ngozi Ezeonu, a leading Nollywood actress, maintained that the time has come for Anambra actors and entertainers in Nollywood to take the bull by the horn and stand firm in their choice of who governs them. “As a body we have a lot of plans for the people of our State, especially the youths, but we can only achieve all these lofty ideas, if an entertainment friendly governor is installed. And through entertainment, we will definitely assist the government of the day in ushering in good governance. We all know that entertainment is big business globally, and we are set to use it as a tool of development judiciously in Anambra. We want to help change the face of Anambra through entertainment, because we helped to achieve that in today’s Nollywood. Though, most of us are resident in Lagos, but we also want to contribute meaningfully on how our State is governed, based on our popularity and the good jobs we do on national and foreign TV’s as well as cinemas,” she pointed out.
Other interim executive members of the fast growing body include: top actor and the current chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Actors Guild Of Nigeria (AGN), Ernest Obi, top actresses, Oby Edozieh and Benita Nzeribe. African China weds … Obey Etuk gets baby boy

Whao! Good things are daily happening in the nation’s entertainment scene, despite the heavy lull currently being experienced in the sector. Chinagorom Onuoha popularly known as Africa China, is finally hooked, after several years of a rollicking bachelor’s life. Elated China, exclusively told us that one lucky Mariam, from Nassarawa State, has finally won his heart, body and soul. They recently had their registry wedding at the Abuja Municipal Council (AMAC), with few family members and friends in attendance. The newly wed began their whirlwind romance over six years ago. Their traditional wedding holds next year, and in the words of China: “ immediately after child birth,” meaning that she has already embarked on a nine-month course of bringing forth an heir to the China’s dynasty. We would definitely keep you informed as event unfolds.
Meanwhile, in a related development, curvy actress Obey Etuk, unknown to many, especially her colleagues and teeming fans, is now married and recently delivered a bouncing baby boy. Etuk’s bundle of joy arrived on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, and mother and child are said to be doing wonderfully well.
The actress, who used to live in Surulere, has now relocated to Okota, where she now resides with her European based hubby, who is also an international businessman from one of the Eastern States.

Ayo Fayose unwinds @ O’Jez


Few weeks after losing gallantly in his battle to deliver Ekiti State to Kayode Fayemi and the Action Congress, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the ex governor of the troubled State, is back and grooving again in the centre of excellence.
The controversial politician visited popular hangout, O’Jez, inside the national stadium, Surulere, penultimate weekend with his entourage and three gun-totting mobile policemen.
Fayose, who thoroughly enjoyed himself while at the celebrity joint, was warmly received and hosted by the management of the hospitality outfit, at his usual VIP corner.
In fact, Fayose caused a scene, when he affectionately hugged one of the Chinese female managers, for over a minute at the entrance of the upper lounge.
He also exchanged pleasantries with some of his admirers and few Nollywood stars in the house before leaving.
It would be recalled that O’Jez hosted Fayose to a lavish reception sometime last year, as one of its patrons. The event was well attended by several Nollywood stars and dignitaries. He was also presented with gifts by the honcho of the outfit, Mr. Joseph Odobeatu, at the colourful gathering. The recent visit was his first, since the Ekiti political crisis started, but surprisingly, he did not come with any “handbag”, unlike his previous visits...

For his immense contributions to the growth of the Nigerian entertainment landscape, especially the music industry, where he once led PMAN, its umbrella body, several stars and celebrities stormed the launching of Tony Okoroji’s book, Copyright, Neighbouring Rights & the New Millionaires, thus adding panache to the gathering. The launch was no doubt a fashion show, a beauty pageant, a music concert, and an intellectual property seminar and more, all rolled into one. It was indeed an entertainment industry carnival. The stars came from every corner, young and old, and sparkled in their resplendent attires as they walked the bright red carpet stylishly laid at the entrance of the institute’s main auditorium by Okoroji’s TOPS Ltd. Among the many Nollywood queens that graced the event were: Stella Damasus Nzeribe, Omotola Jelade Ekehinde, Kate Henshaw Nuttal, Eucharia Anunobi, Stephnora Falana and Portia Yamahan.. Their male counterparts were also
not left out of the party. Several leading comedians also sparkled at the event. Within the music industry, musical legends such as Sir Victor Uwaifo, Christy Essien Igbokwe, Onyeka Onwenu, Ras Kimono, Laolu Akins, Adewale Ayuba also arrived in style with lots of the younger generation of stars, also in attendance. Even the hitherto warring sides in PMAN seemed to have called a truce in order to honour Chief Tony Okoroji. Both Tee Mac Iseli and Admiral Dele Abiodun were there in their party best and each of them came with a large retinue of supporters. Niteshift Governor, Ken Calebs Olumese was also present. The guru’s and best brains of the intellectual property community were also there in full force. Also present were many top city lawyers such as Mr. Toyin Subair, Chairman and CEO of the fast growing HITV satellite TV network. Computer guru and chairman of Zinox Technologies, Chief Leo-Stan Eke who was chairman of the Red Carpet Launch,
held the audience spellbound as he recounted his personal experiences in Nigeria. Chief Eke concluded that Intellectual property is the future of the Nigerian economy and provides the greatest assurance that the son of the poor in Nigeria will become rich without stealing. He commended Chief Okoroji, whom he described as a man of style, for the groundbreaking book. Former information Minister, Prince Tony Momoh who presented the book amidst lots of fanfare said that the book could not have come at a better time. He said that he was not surprised at the quality of the book, as he had identified Tony Okoroji’s promise and ‘stubbornness’ from when Okoroji was 17 years old. He recommended that the book be used as text material in institutions of higher learning across the country. Falola who flew in from London to pay respect to the man who as he told the audience, housed him for three years and turned him into a success after his family had sent him away from home because of his decision to play music. The well-attended occasion was the commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the death of the legend, from Jamaica. Put together by O’Jez Music, the evening climaxed when the Mamuzee brothers teamed up with rising Reggae apostle, Jahcub to thrill the grand gathering. As they rendered several hit numbers from the various works of the legend, the capacity filled hall kept cheering and rocking alongside the band. The groove reached a feverish pitch, when some top actors in the house happily marched to stage and displayed their dancing skills, to the admiration of their fans.

Top actor, Charles Awurum raps EFCC

Eastern Nigerian based top actor, Charles Awurum will be hitting shelves soon with his debut album. Entitled EFCC (Every Face Commits Crime), the thespian turned crooner, disclosed that the hilarious work, is basically a musical satire on our society and also raises moral questions on corruption, polygamy, love, religion and other social problems bedeviling the society.
EFCC, is a seven tracker, comprising five vocals and two instrumentals. It features stars like: John Okafor, Sam Loco Efe, Victor Osuagwu, Mamuzee, Dauda and Ugo Stevenson. The album also has Angela Ephraim as the lead female vocalist.
Continuing, Awurum, who is also the chairman of Conference of Imo State actors, said EFCC, is part of his contributions towards the re-branding of Nigeria. “It will go a long way in sanitizing our people’s mind towards a better Nigeria, we support the minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili on her move to re-brand Nigeria.”
The video of EFCC was jointly directed by Zion .O. Nwaigwe and Awurum. It is being marketed nationwide by Magic Lens pictures and distributed by Ehbbiy Ventures. The act hopes to embark on a nationwide tour soon, to further promote the work.

NFVCB partners LSFVCB

In the spirit of moving the nation’s motion picture industry forward and further promoting the joint initiative between the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board (LSFVCB), an hour mock raid on hawkers of pirated and pornographic film materials was recently conducted in the Ikeja, Lagos metropolis amid applause.
The Executive secretary of LSFVCB, Otunba Dayo Awobotu who made the disclosure at a recent briefing organized by both regulatory bodies, said all culprits would be made to face prosecution, adding that they have resolved to reduce piracy, which is the biggest problem plaguing the film industry in Lagos State and by extension, Nigeria, to its barest minimum.

Also speaking, Mr. Obiora Chukwumba, SA to the DG of the NFVCB, Mr. Emeka Mba, while commending the Lagos State government for their cooperation, stated that the Board’s involvement in the collaboration with Lagos State was borne out of their belief in the idea that government at every level have to work together and share responsibilities.
He said the newly introduced Classification Label by the Board would play a vital role in fighting piracy as every legitimate work is expected to carry the seal.
To ensure the successful operation of the collaboration between the two agencies, two committees, the supervisory and implementation committees with members equally drawn from both organizations have been set up to be in charge of monitoring and enforcement.
Otunba Awobotu, who disclosed this also said that the Lagos State government has the intention to introduce the issue of filming license in the state, which is a practice obtainable all over the world, stressing that it is wrong for filmmakers to go to any state in the world and start shooting without first obtaining a license.
It would be recalled that both agencies had last year signed an MOU to jointly regulate the film industry in Lagos State.

We cannot dispute the fact that fast rising actress and TV presenter Adaora Ukoh, is definitely having a blast and enjoying life to the hilt in recent times.
Few days after celebrating her birthday with pals and colleagues, she jetted out to the UK, her first major trip outside our continent.
She recently breezed back to base, after spending two weeks in Gordon Brown’s country, grooving, relaxing and networking for the next level.

Info at our disposal has it that the busty and single lady is currently busy lensing and interviewing some female achievers, for her forthcoming programme on TV, Diva’s Dynasty. Another bird also squealed to us that the law graduate turned thespian, now lives in Lekki.
While Ukoh is rejoicing, another of her colleague, Chioma Toplis, is sad and mourning. Gathered that the London based actress married to a Briton, recently lost her father-in-law to the evil hands of death. According to her, Mr. Jack Toplis, died recently after a brief illness. He will be buried this weekend in Derby County, his birthplace.


Kids set for HITV’s Children’s Day gig


Children whose parents and guardians are subscribers to HiTV, Nigeria’s leading Satellite Company will on May 27, globally known as Children’s Day, be treated and pampered to a lavish bash, by the management of the Toyin Subair’s led cable TV station,



Specially billed to hold at the All Season’s Plaza, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, HiTV in collaboration with Tastee Fried Chicken, Ribena and Mimee Noodles will treat the kids to a bash “never experienced before”, as revealed in a statement signed by HiTV’s Public Relations Manager, Mr. Justin Akpovi-Esade.
Participation in the coming party, the statement further read, is simple. “All the kid need to do is simply send an SMS stating his name, his favourite kiddies programme on HiTV and smart card number to 080 333 75 333. The first 300 entries get invited to the party, which begins at 10am.”
HiTV, since the beginning of the year has embarked on a series of reward initiatives for its subscribers. It had so far given out four Geely CK II cars to four of its lucky subscribers in its monthly draws. This reward package that was unveiled at the second anniversary of HiTV by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Toyin Subair, will run through June.
Hard working HiTV dealers are not left out of the largesse as aside winning several mouth-watering prizes at the anniversary ceremony; a top dealer will drive home a Hilux Van in some couple of weeks. “This is now the season for the kids and HiTV is using this coming party to say thank you to kids that have stayed loyal to our wonderful kiddies’ channels on HiTV platform. In a bid to further raise the quality of its production and add more value to the content it dishes out to viewers, the cast and crew of Spider, one of the most exciting and leading soaps on air, has gone back on location for more riveting episodes.
Confirming the good news, Mrs. Ariyike Oladipo, the producer/financier of the big budget soap, disclosed that they are currently on locations within the Lagos metropolis lensing more episodes of the rave soap. “ We decided to hit locations again to shoot more exciting episodes for our teeming viewers. These new episodes, I can assure you would definitely change the face of home entertainment for the whole family. She further added that her outfit, Apreel Venture, is committed to churning out quality productions, which can compete favourably anywhere in the world.
Oladipo, who is also the producer of award winning Dear Mother, revealed that the new episodes would be on air soon on AIT Network as well as other stations. “We also have the intention of hooking up with some leading cable TV stations soon, because our vision is to air spider globally.”
Some of the leading names in the didactic soap are: Akin Lewis, Maimuna Yahaya, Ronnie Dikko, Femi Branch, Jaiye Kuti, Dare Fasasi and several others.

More accolades as Wedding Magazine debuts


No doubt that the mere fact that life after a wedding deserves attention just as important as the wedding itself has given rise to a new publication, Beyond Wedding magazine, which was launched recently in Lagos. The magazine is a bi-monthly from the stable of PR Impekable, which also publishes the Wedding Planner.
At the unveiling in Lagos, Mrs Dupe Adeniran, its editor-in-chief, said Beyond Wedding started out as a column in Wedding Planner with articles from her husband, Taiwo. “The feedback we got from readers encouraged us to dedicate more pages of the magazine to beyond wedding issues. Columns such as True Womanhood, Recipes, Relationships and Fruitful Womb later emerged from Staff Writers and Contributors.
“We believe that life after wedding deserves attention, and as such we continued with our life-after-wedding articles which have today evolved to become a magazine of its own,” she said.
Adeniran believes that the magazine will not only enlighten couples but will also instruct them on how to live a happy and fulfilling marital life. “Our research shows that newly-wedded couples go through immense challenges to cope with their new status and we saw this as our responsibility to instruct and enlighten them on living successfully and happily in a marriage.”
She explains further “Beyond Wedding highlights how to make a marriage work a day, a week, a month, a year and many more years after the wedding day. It’s about your first meal, first fight, first pregnancy, first baby, etc. Our objective is to settle the newly weds in their new homes and help nurture old marriages too.”

Since 1992, when easy going Ugo Emezue graduated from the English and Literature department of the Abia State University, he has not stopped dazzling the media world. Emezue who started his journalism career with Galaxy TV, Ibadan, Oyo State before moving over to DBN Lagos and later Abuja, as the station’s head of news / bureau Chief, at a very tender age, no doubt had seen it all in the saturated industry.After single-handedly bringing verve and vim to the station, always-on-the move Emezue eventually left DBN for STV, where he also rose to the position of head of news, within a short stint with the media outfit. He successfully capped his stay at the station when he became the presenter of the popular and flagship political programme, Head-to-Head, as well as a member of their editorial board. Emezue, who was among the few Nigerian journalists that covered the last US presidential elections, is now with TVC, where he heads their Current Affairs Desk and also presents Fireworks, a wave-making political programme, every Thursday night, to the delight of his teeming viewers and fans.In fact, the joke in town is that having traversed the major electronic media houses in Nigeria, Emezue, might soon be jetting out to further horn his media skills with either the CNN or Sky News. The date for the white wedding, according to the newest couple in town, would soon be made public.Interestingly too, while Effiong and her Romeo, are already enjoying their honeymoon, bad boy actor and leading model, Moses Efret, is also hooked.

Encomium’s black and white ball rules Lagos

Fashola’s Lagos literally stood still penultimate Sunday evening when Encomium, the magazine and awards company hosted its long awaited Black and White Ball, amid grandeur and pizzazz.
Held at the spacious and upscale KFA events place Lekki, the high-octane soiree, was well attended by dignitaries from all walks of life.
The grand gathering, which had victuals flowing from all corners of the well-decorated hall eventually climaxed with the presentation of the 900-page, three part, all gloss, feel good compendia dubbed: a decade of encomium.
The presentations were separately done by the duo of Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, the amiable wife of the Lagos State Governor, who was unavoidably absent.
In line with the organizers promise, glittering Limos were also positioned at strategic places to ferry distinguished guests, stars and celebrities to the red carpet session for photo calls and cocktails.
Live music, was of course supplied by singing couple, Tunde and Wunmi Obe (TWO), who enthralled the guests with tunes from both the old and new schools. Julius Agwu later came on stage to thrill with some ribs cracking jokes. Femi Segun anchored the event.


Jedi set for D’G’s Pikin


Self- acclaimed Well- Fed-Comedian of the Federal Republic; Jedi is poised to dazzle Nigerians, especially his teeming fans in a hilarious show tagged: Jedi live in D’G’s Pikin.
According to the act and his team at Musicom Entertainment, its going to be a two-in-one event that would feature his album premiere as well as comedy performance. Other entertainers billed to mesmerize alongside Jedi on the D-day include: Nomoreloss, M.I., Jafextra, Eldee, Sound Sultan and 9ice. Others coming on board are: Dekunle Fuji, Mike Aremu, Kenny Saint Brown, Tosin Martins and Bouqui.

Heavensgate clocks five, expands


Unknown to many, Heavensgate, the Christian –oriented soap from the stable of Zulu Films Production is already five years on air and still waxing stronger.
Making this known to us recently was its writer, producer and director Mr. Zik Zulu-Okafor.
Elated Okafor, said the divinely inspired project, which hit the airwaves on Sunday, April 4, 2004, on STV, has successfully weathered the storms and ran for five years, with financial support solely from the City of David Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Now back with a bigger, better and repackaged episodes of the family drama, which dwells on all aspects of our daily lives, cerebral Okafor, is now calling on corporate sponsors to buy into the project.
“After five years of sponsorship from the Redeemed Christian Church of God, we now want the corporate world to be part of this project by endorsements, sponsorships and advertisements. They should be part of this story, which is watched and applauded with testimonies all over the world. I will also remain grateful to the late Pastor Eskor, who accepted this project whole heartedly, when we started five years ago”, he said.
Speaking further, Okafor, also a renowned filmmaker in Nollywood and the former president of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), disclosed that Heavensgate would soon be on other network stations as well as some reputable cable stations, adding that it was professionally and dispassionately shot for the whole family and cuts across religious inclinations. “Its not your usual Christian drama, Heavensgate is a unique Christian soap, with the sole aim of winning souls for Christ”.
Currently on STV every Sunday night, Heavensgate with over 170 episodes also boasts of an intimidating cast list. Among the leading names are: Fred Amata, Alex Usifo-Omiagbo, Monalisa Chindu, Enebeli Elebuwa and a host of others. “We are out to let viewers know that Heavensgate is the scent of a storm laced with several conflicts, he posited.”


Chichi dumps acting for writing


Few years after temporarily quitting Nollywood, Chichi Okoroaftor, the sweet faced starlet who dazzled in flicks like: Sweet Mama, Evil Altar, Ass on Fire, King Of My Village, among others, is gradually carving a niche for herself in the literary world.
The 23 year old English and Literary Studies undergraduate of the Abia State University, as you are reading this, is getting set to publish her first set of collection of poems.
Amazingly too, she is on the verge of rounding off works on her two books, entitled: The Vacant Throne and Abiana. The two works according to her, are dramas, and would be coming out soon. “I’m also into prose as well, but these days, I’m beginning to get more involved with poetry, because it allows me to express myself in a special way, she enthused.
Pretty and soft spoken Okoroafor, who disclosed that she started writing while in Primary Four, said she looks up to great names like: Odia Ofeimun, Niyi Osundare, Flora Nwapa and a few others. “These great names inspire me a lot and my dream is to follow in their footsteps in my literary odyssey. I also want to be a force in the literary world someday”, she maintained with smiles.
Okoroafor, who loves reading and writing is also a member of the editorial board of Igba-ELSA, her departmental publication, where she contributes regularly.
Though temporarily out of Nollywood for now, she however, hopes to bounce back, after obtaining another post graduate degree in Law, based on her passion for the wig and gown profession.


Wake boosts the entertainment scene


With the sole aim of discovering and harnessing the hidden talents that are abound in the Nigerian entertainment landscape, as well as exploring all avenues to project and showcase these talents, Wake Entertainment recently opened its corporate doors of showbizness to Nigeria and the rest of the world. Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the prime movers of the new outfit, briefly told the story of the company. In their words:

We also have plans to feature a portfolio of specialized businesses that create and deliver original content for live and televised entertainment, which consists of live events, the sale of merchandise at live events, television programming and pay-per-view, and video-on-demand programming”.
Continuing, the duo further revealed that in their effort to showcase talents, they have an African tour lined up towards the last quarter of the year. “The tour, according to them is intended to span through some African regions namely: Western Africa, Central Africa, Eastern Africa, Northern and southern Africa. The objective of this tour is to make known the richness of our Nigerian music and the availability of so many hidden talents here in Nigeria. Also it is to support the government in its effort to re-brand the image of the country. This tour will feature alongside, some popular Nigerian artistes and some foreign artistes to spice up the event.”
To further underscore its seriousness in the nation’s showbiz terrain, the outfit recently signed Tiani and Champion Kunle, two up and coming singers, on its debutant label. While Tiani is a Hip-hop act, Kunle is deeply rooted in High life music. The videos of both works would soon be hitting the airwaves alongside their full works.
