It is no longer news that the organizers of the revered African Jewel Award, African Focus Incorporated (AFI), US, has picked Stephanie Okereke, an award-winning Nollywood actress, as one of the recipients at this year’s event. What is however news, is that the ravishing actress, would be jetting out early next week, for the prestigious award that holds on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Veterans Memorial Complex, US. Sexy Okereke will be honoured alongside other global stars and selected celebrities.
According to the organizers, Okereke's tenacity, wit, intelligence, grace and natural acting abilities has earned her a reputation as one of the best actresses on the African continent and in Nollywood, the third largest film industry in the world. A graduate of English and Literal studies, Okereke made her first venture into film in 1997. By 2003, she had already won the Reel Awards "Best Actress" for her role in the movie "Emotional Crack.” In 2005, she was a nominee for the Africa Movie Academy Awards [AMAA], as well as the recently held 2009 edition. On her way to AMAA, however, tragedy struck when she was involved in a terrible car accident that left her with a broken leg and burns on her face and hands. Okereke, with a fighting and determined spirit, bounced back and by 2006, she won the Afro-Hollywood Awards, Film Makers USA Award for Excellence with subsequent awards in 2007 for the Miriam Makeba Award for Excellence and 2008 Beyond the Tears
Humanitarian Awards for her work against rape and vesico vaginal fistula and HIV/AIDS.

Not satisfied with being just an actress and wanting to create a voice and other roles for African women in Africa's film industry, Okereke came to the United States to study film at the New York Film Academy at Universal Studios, Los Angeles. Armed with her knowledge, intelligence, determination and creativity, Okereke established her production company "Next Page Productions" and has recently expanded her portfolio to include the titles of director, writer and producer in her first feature Hollywood-Nollywood hybrid film, "Through the Glass," creating what she hopes is a preview of the direction and roles African women will embrace in the film industry. Amazingly, the film was up for nomination in this year’s AMAA, for the Best Picture category. Other distinguished nominees alongside Miss Okereke, at the forthcoming event also known as African Goodwill Awards, include: US born and Grammy award winning singer, Chaka Khan, Dame Patience Goodluck
Jonathan, Mo’nique Hicks, Hope Foye, apostle Frederick Price and few others.



Club Papas fetes Okey Bakassi

As part of the non-stop activities lined up for the just concluded Easter celebrations, the management and staff of Papas Entertainment, who are the proud owners and promoters of rave hangout, Club Papas, hosted top entertainer, Okey Bakassi to a lavish reception.
The well attended/packaged all night event took place on Easter Friday and had dignitaries from all walks of life, coming to felicitate with the amiable celebrant.
Bakassi, currently the Executive Assistant on Entertainment to the Imo State Governor, Ikedi Ohakim, according to Frank Okanigbo, the boss of the upscale hangout, was being hosted and celebrated for his immense contributions and support to the Nigerian entertainment scene.
Several Nollywood actors, comedians and musicians added verve and panache to the fun-filled gathering with their intimidating presence.
In his brief remarks, Bakassi, who now shuttles between Lagos and Imo States, thanked all for coming and further promised to continue with his good works for the nation’s entertainment industry.
He was also full of appreciations to Gov. Ohakim, for deeming it fit to appoint him into his government, pledging that he will never let the governor and the people of Imo State down, while discharging his duties.


Ejike Asiegbu return with NAYA

Top actor and the national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Mr. Ejike Asiegbu in collaborations with the Movie Reporters Guild of Nigeria (MORGON) and Pontiffo, recently unveiled the Nollywood Actor of the Year Awards (NAYA), billed to hold soon.
Shedding more light on the event, Asiegbu, who is also the CEO of Forever Communications, one of the prime movers of the coming event, said the aim was to reward Nollywood actors and those working behind the scenes, who have also done well for themselves and the nation’s motion picture industry. “NAYA is purely a private initiative and has nothing to do with the AGN. It is being powered by Ejike Asiegbu, who happens to be the president of AGN, so in essence, it is my own personal project and has nothing to do with the guild,” he explained.
Several big names in Nollywood as well as other dignitaries all graced the recent unveiling of NAYA, which held elaborately at O’Jez Entertainment Centre, Surulere, Lagos, amid glitz.
Speaking further, elated Asiegbu also hinted that the Otunba Segun Runsewe-led Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), has agreed to partner and power the event proper, which holds in the last month of 2009, in Abuja. “NAYA promises to be grand and very inclusive”, further assures Asiegbu.


Emem Isong hits location again

Immensely gifted scriptwriter and filmmaker Emem Isong has hit locations again for another heart-wrenching movie from her ever-busy stable.
Tentatively entitled: Bursting Out, Isong, whose efforts in recently released movie, Reloaded, is still being applauded by movie buffs and critics, posited that her latest offering, would equally be a reference point within and outside Nollywood when completed.
Leading the pack of stars in the soon coming movie is sultry actress, Genevieve Nnaji, who is ably supported by Desmond Elliot. Others include: Nse Ikpe Etim, Michael Majid, Susan Peters, Amanda Ebeye, Moyo Lawal and a host of other up and coming acts.
Directed by youthful Daniel Ademinokhai, the movie tells the twisted story of love, betrayal and back stab. On why she went back to location so soon, Isong, whose another of her finished movie, Guilty Pleasure, is due for a nationwide release in the next couple of weeks, disclosed that the need to always satisfy the yearnings of her fans brought about the movie. “Producing quality movies has become a part of me and I won’t stop doing this for my teeming fans and followers”, she maintained. The duo of Uduak Isong Oguamana and Bola Aduwo screen played the script for Emem Isong, who also wrote the story.


D’ Heavens plans big for anniversary

After one year of bringing uninterrupted and high powered entertainment /night life to the people of Festac Town and Lagos State in general, D’ Heavens nite club, is set to roll out the red carpets for a successful and breathtaking anniversary.
Commenting on the forth-coming event, which is already serenading the Festac environs as well as patrons and members of the well-patronized hangout, Chief Chijioke Awalite, the honcho of the outfit, boasted it would be an unforgettable event.
In his words, D’ Heavens nite club is fully set and ready to host elaborately all those that have contributed immensely to its growth and success in the last one year.
“On Saturday, April 25, 2009, the whole of Lagos, especially Festac Town, would be agog for our first anniversary. It is going to be a nite of special entertainment laced with unending fun, for all those that are coming. We are expecting dignitaries from all walks of life, including the music, movie, comedy and fashion sectors. Special guests are also coming from outside Nigeria. HMAN lights up the music scene

New kid on the block, Humphrey Okeke came to national prominence, and albeit, the consciousness of music buffs as well as its practitioners with the hit song Ndoli-Ndoli. The good work also earned the talented crooner an access key into the Nigerian music scene.
However, after four videos from a yet -to-be-released album, an award and general acceptance from the industry, it is certain that the 24-year-old graduate of Igbinedion University is ready to debut. “I am ready to hit the Nigerian music scene with my album Ndoli Ndoli, which means struggle, but the message I was trying to pass is that this world is not perfect, just enjoy the little you have’ he hinted.
Born and raised in a Catholic family of eight children, H man started his musical odyssey as a member of the school’s choir while in St. Bridget College and from then the passion began to grow. ‘ I love music, music is my passion, and that is why I am not in it to make money, if you have a passion for some thing, you do it, not caring if it would bring in money or not’ he added.
Ndoli Ndoli, a 12 tracker, is due for release on the April 15, 2009. Expected to be distributed by UBA pacific music and Obaino music respectively, the album will feature songs like Ndoli, Ndoli, Scared of Love, H man Party and Thank you featuring MI. A song he dedicated to his girlfriend - Ambo 3 contestant- Uche Odoh.
Others include Uwadiwe- a song where he expresses his discontent about what is happening in the country, Mmemme, Money and Mama Africa featuring 9ice.
Also, the last in the chains of videos to be dropped before the release of his album, ‘Thank you’ was directed by DJ Tee, in Abuja, Nigeria, while Clarence Peter shot ‘Uwadiwe’.

Popular actor and AGN president, Ejike Asiegbu, was a one-time Students Union leader at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He was also a former aide to Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu.

No doubt, it takes only the first daughter of a former president and wife of a serving governor to make such headline news. And with speculations rife in political circles that the wife of the Executive Governor of Zamfara State, Hajiya Aisha Shinkafi (nee Babangida), a top celebrity and delight of paparazzi, might have been tipped for a senatorial seat come next election in the State, official response emanating from her Excellency’s office, however, indicates otherwise. It has also put to rest the rumour currently spreading across the country like a wild fire. While speaking to newsmen at the Government House in Gusau, few days ago, the First Lady unequivocally said that she has never nursed any such political ambition in recent times. Adding that in as much as she appreciates the good gesture of the group that is canvassing for her to take part in such activity, she cannot but disappoint them, as she has no such intention, now or in the nearest
future. “I am aware that a group has promoted such cause, but as much as I admire their sincere and good intentions for me, unfortunately, I cannot but ignore their suggestion. My role as a wife is my major priority now and certainly, this is my major concern for now. NFVCB appoints new zonal coordinator

In a bid to further reposition and consolidate on the gains of the newly introduced framework distribution policy, the leadership of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has appointed Mr. Edion Edward Abumere, as the new Zonal Coordinator, in charge of the South West Zonal office, Lagos. He takes over from Mrs. Abosede Ojetokun (Nee Francis), who resumes at the Abuja headquarters of the Board, as Deputy Director, in charge of Verification. Edion is making a return to a familiar terrain in the Zonal office, having been transferred to Abuja by the Director General, Emeka Mba when he assumed office. Edion is vastly experienced and has worked in virtually all the various sections of the Board. However, he is widely remembered by staff in both Abuja and Lagos for his meticulousness in the film Verification section of the Board. Meanwhile, the staff of the Zone recently organized a sent forth party for the former Zonal Coordinator. Mrs.
Ojetokun, who walked down the aisle, a couple of weeks ago. She was full of emotions as the staff and well-wishers feted her. According to most of those present at the soiree, she would be remembered for her philanthropy and dedication to work.


Deraco production unveils holistic package

Having been licensed to distribute films nationwide, by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Deraco Productions, ably led by Mr. Edwin Oragwam, is now poised to raise the stakes in Nollywood.
Authoritatively gathered that the outfit with its corporate headquarters based in Lagos, is currently organizing movie/music auditions in all the 36 states of the federation, including Abuja.
And the aim of the exercise, he said was to give Nigerians, especially those desirous of making it big in the movie or music industries, the opportunity to come on board, showcase their talents and hit stardom, through the right channel.
Elaborating more on the laudable initiative Mr. Oragwam, a foremost filmmaker in Nollywood, maintained that the project would definitely help change the face of Nollywood and introduce fresh faces into the industry. “Our forms for this project are already selling at designated banks nationwide. At the end of the day, we would invite only those that bought the forms for the nationwide auditions, after which they would start featuring in any of our movie or music productions. So, in essence the form is an automatic visa, for them to use in gaining access to all productions from the stable of Deraco Productions nation-wide. This is our own little way of constantly helping to elevate and reposition Nollywood. We are going back to the grassroots to rediscover new stars for the industry”. He further hinted that the package would be formally launched soon, in the six geo-political zones of the federation with pomp and glitz.


Deferent Pepu rocks with Afro flavor

Deferent Pepu, a new Afro/Hip-hop group based in the ancient city of Ibadan, Oyo State is fully set to storm the Lagos music scene with their style, charisma and natural swagger.
The quartet, apart from being good vocally, also combines good choreography with their music, thus making them fans favourite.
According to youthful Ehis, their manager, the group’s style of Hip-hop is without vulgarity, but rich in content and dancing pleasure. “They have an electrifying stage presence that holds their audience spell bound along with their excellent stage crafts. In fact, these guys are star materials and would be hitting the airwaves and shelves soon.”
Interestingly, the fast rising group that has thrilled at several big shows and concerts, recently signed a mouth watering deal with Funafric Limited, an Afro- centric music vending and entertainment company, to help market and distribute their coming work on the internet.
Deferent Pepu, is currently being promoted and handled by Royal Blue Communications, an indigenous outfit with ability of turning dreams into reality.

Nollywood takes the back seat at AMAA

The Nigerian motion picture industry, globally known as Nollywood suffered a devastating blow at the just held fifth edition of the annual Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), which took place in Yenogoa, Bayelsa State, South-south, Nigeria.
Even with a constellation of Nollywood stars and filmmakers, the industry only struggled to win just eight and half awards at the grand gathering that was anchored by the trio of Julius Agwu, Kate Henshaw- Nuttal and Kofi Bucknor.

Unlike the past four editions, where Nollywood actors and filmmakers, had always carted home all the major awards, Kenyan, South African and Egyptian actors and filmmakers took the shine off them this year.
“From A Whisper”, a Kenyan film that vividly x-rays the 1997 terrorist attack at the US embassy in Nairobi, was the star of the glamourous night. It proudly walked away with five major and keenly contested trophies, in the following categories: Best Editing, Soundtrack, Screenplay, Directing and Picture. Coming of Age, another film from Barack Obama’s fatherland, also won in the Best Short Documentary category, thus bringing their total hauls to six that historic night.

Trailing Kenya that eventful night was South Africa, they won three awards in the categories of: Most Promising Actor and Actress as well as Best Film in African Language, with a thought-provoking movie entitled: Gugu and Andile.

Another surprise at the epoch gathering was Seventh Heaven, an Egyptian movie, which fetched the lead act, Farouk Alfishawi, the Best Actor plaque. The movie later added the Best Sound award to its kitty.
Among the face saving awards won by Nigerian actors and filmmakers, whom Peace Anyiam Osigwe, the CEO of AMAA, warned to quickly get out of the arrogance of being the third largest film industry in the world, were: Best Actress, won by Funke Akindele, for her exploits in the hit comedy flick, Jenifa and Best Cinematography won by Izu Ojukwu’s Cindy’s Note.

Other winners included: Michelle Bello, who walked home happily with two diadems, for her efforts in Small Boy. The movie won in the categories of: Best Art Direction and Child Actor, which went to Richard Chukwuma.
Tunde Kelani’s Arugba, also won in two separate categories, namely: Best Costume and Nigerian Film. Another Nigerian movie, Live to Remember, was adjudged the Best in Make Up and Supporting Actress, which went to Mercy Johnson, while Shit on the Rock, shared the prize for the Best Documentary Feature with…

The duo of Zeb Ejiro and Gaston Kabore from Burkina Faso, were decorated with AMAA’s Life Time Achievement Awards, for their immense contributions to the growth of the African film and cinema industries.
Another Burkina Faso movie, also went home with the prize for the Best Animation, while Battle of the Soul, a heart-wrenching flick from Uganda, picked the statuettes for the Best Visual Effect and Supporting Actor, respectively.

Moreover, the Dr. Hyginus Ekwuazi-led broad based jury did not give any award in the Short Film category, based on the fact that all the entries submitted by filmmakers did not meet the required standards.
Perhaps, the major attraction for the night was the presence and coming on stage of two Hollywood legends, Forest Whitaker and Danny Glover. Their intimidating presence was palpable in the capacity filled Glory land hall.
Other side attractions witnessed at the long night included performances from acts such as: African legend, Salif Kaita, Deborah Frazer, J- Martins as well as some cultural displays from the Bayelsan Dance Troupe.


While delivering her welcome address, elated Mrs. Osigwe, who also paid tributes to some AMAA fallen heroes, urged African filmmakers to always do the right films that would help to change the wrong perception about Africa, her people and patrimony.
The event, which began with a red carpet session, eventually ended with a post awards bash cum late night dinner at the Bayelsa State Government House.

Meanwhile, some actors and filmmakers who spoke with us immediately after the awards, hailed AMAA and its judges, for doing a wonderful job and giving the awards the true pan African look that has eluded it since inception five years ago.
“With what has happened, Nollywood filmmakers will definitely sit up and do more challenging films. We will be ready for AMAA next year”, said Tunde Kelani.

Though, better organized this year, the organizers should however, stick to time in subsequent editions, and also desist from allowing the awards to drag late into the night.

The Nigerian motion picture industry, globally known as Nollywood suffered a nauseating set back by managing to win only eight and half awards at the recent Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), which held in Yenogoa, Bayelsa State amid grandeur and constellation of stars. Unlike in the past four editions, where Nollywood filmmakers and actors had always dazzled and carted home virtually all the awards, this year’s edition saw films from Kenya, South Africa and Egypt, walking home with the major awards respectively.
In fact, the only saving grace for Nollywood at the grand gathering was Funke Akindele, whose exploits in the hit comedy, Jenifa, fetched her the coveted prize of Best Actress. Nollywood struggled and managed to win only eight and half awards out of the 24 available categories, and this according to many practitioners and industry followers, was a dismal outing for the nation’s film sector. Sincerely, quality films from Kenya, South Africa and Egypt, really dusted Nollywood and made her films and filmmakers looked like apprentices at the event, which held on our home soil.
Kenyan movie, From A Whisper, walked tall at the event with six major awards, in the categories of: Best Short Documentary, Editing, Soundtrack, Screenplay, Directing and the main award of the historic night, Best Picture, to the consternation of many, especially Nollywood pundits. South African movie, Gugu and Andile, carted home three plaques in the categories of: Best Film In Africa and Promising Actor and Actress, respectively. Also, an Egyptian actor, Farouk Alfishawi, got the prize for the Best Actor on the continent, with his role in Seventh Heaven, the movie also won in the Sound category. Battle of the Soul, from Uganda, made history with two awards in the areas of: Best Visual Effects and Supporting Actor, respectively, while Burkina Faso, won for Best Animation. Highly subdued Nollywood managed to make Nigeria proud with awards in the categories of: Art Direction, Make Up, Child Actor, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Costume, Best Nigerian
Film and Documentary Feature, which was jointly won.
The duo of Zeb Ejiro and Gaston Kabore, both from Nigeria and Burkina Faso respectively, were decorated with AMAA’s Life Time Achievement awards at the epoch outing.
Also, the trio of Kofi Bucknor, Kate Henshaw-Nuttal and Julius Agwu beautifully anchored the lovely evening event. Performances from acts like: Salif Kaita, Deborah Frazier, J-Martins, Xplicit and few others, further helped to spice up the long night, which witnessed a post event dinner at the Government House..

HiTV re-packages for better viewership



It is no longer news that in its continued efforts aimed at giving its loyal and valuable subscribers quality service, HiTV Nigeria, recently carried out a rescan on its channels. This exercise was done after weeks of scrolling messages on the screen to inform its numerous subscribers.
The steps to be taken to rescan both HiTV and Strong decoders were elaborated in the information scrolled across the screens for weeks, in the event it loses signal. In a statement signed by Mr. Olumide Amure, Chief Operating Officer, HiTV, he said the wholly Nigerian satellite television programmes outfit, was aware that some subscribers may not be able to receive signals after the exercise, “that was why we took the effort to scroll the information across the screen for weeks prior to the exercise, this is because of our commitment to giving our subscribers a relaxing and enjoyable viewing experience. We have also improved the video quality of our channels by procuring additional bandwidth for our use and so we are now able to broadcast clearer channels. We have also continued to acquire more movies for both Hi Mix and Hi Kids as well as Hi Nolly channels and you can now watch new movies every Sunday on Hi Mix, and from this April, children movies
every day on Hi Kids.”

HiTV, Amure said, also placed advertorials in the media educating viewers on the rescan procedures since the exercise took place. “In any situation, our subscribers’ interest is uppermost on our minds, and that is why we strive day and night to deliver first class services. We have also advised our subscribers to visit any of our agents across the country or our Ebute Metta, Lagos office (for Lagos residents), where willing customer care agents are on ground to assist anyone who still finds it difficult to rescan his decoder, following the steps given in our advertorials. This was at no cost to anybody,” he added.
The Chief Operating Officer, however, regrets any inconvenience the rescan exercise might have cost HiTV’s loyal subscribers, reiterating that the exercise was in the best interest of “our subscribers. If you noticed, since the rescan exercise took place, our picture quality has improved tremendously. I want to state again that in the process of improving the video quality of the channels, the channels had to be re-arranged and the effect of this was the ‘scrambled channel’ observed by several subscribers on their decoders. Not all subscribers were however affected as all those with decoder software versions 2.0.7 and above were not affected. Those affected however, only need to re-scan their decoders to continue receiving and enjoying their channels. We have also gone ahead to upgrade as many subscribers’ decoders as possible and this remains an ongoing process. We advise all subscribers to endeavors to upgrade to the latest software version.

Amure further assured subscribers that the process was very easy, adding that there is a campaign currently on to educate people in the media about the rescanning operation.”
Meanwhile, one of the fallouts of the rescan is perhaps, the acquisition of Animax channel by HiTV. “The Animax channel is a product of our relationship with Sony, one of the most comprehensive entertainment companies in the world. Sony Entertainment Television (SET) is a product of the same relationship. Subscribers should be on the look out for more exciting and relevant channels in the near future.

Censors Board wages war on erring distributors


As part of its efforts to always sanitize the film industry and encourage global best practices, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), recently suspended the operating licenses of some erring distributors who contravened the regulations of the New Framework on film and video distribution in the country.
The apex film regulatory body, in what is seen as a paradigm shift in its relations with the licensees said it has suspended the licenses of all licensed distributors that flaunted the resolutions of the Distributors’ Congress held in Abuja on March 13th, 2009.
Specifically, the Board frowned at the manner distributors were repeatedly breaching the home video release process, releasing films without classification labels and circumventing other tenets of the New Framework with impunity.
According to the Head of the New Distribution Framework, Obiora Chukwumba, “the Board has conclusively established that irrespective of the subsisting regulations on Home Video Release Process, some of the distributors have released their works in flagrant disregard to the regulations governing home movie release”.
Embittered Chukwumba further stated that all the offenders had been duly communicated. He regretted that the distributors declined all entreaties from the Board to them to desist from disobeying the resolutions of the Distributors’ Congress. The Distributors’ Congress held during the BOBTV in Abuja had resolved to adhere strictly to the dictates of the Home Video Release Process, which states among others that; a Distributor must receive official signal that a film or video work has been censored, all censorship corrections effected and a release certificate duly obtained from the Board.
The Board had in a memo to the President of Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Emma Isikaku and the President, Yoruba Video Film Producers/ Marketers Association of Nigeria, Prince Jide Kosoko, on March 4, 2009, entitled “Incessant Breach of Censorship and Release Regulations”, expressed its displeasure at the flagrant abuse of the statutory regulations on censorship and home video regulations of the Board by its members.
The Board noted, “Under the Framework on Distribution and Exhibition of movies, it is an offence bordering on criminal plot to release a movie into the market without due censorship and release protocols”. The release made it categorically clear that, it would henceforth hold the entire leadership of the associations culpable for further breach of any of the protocols of the new framework on films and video distribution by its members.

PEFTI hosts foreign Nollywood enthusiasts

The Wale Adenuga-led PEFTI Film Institute recorded yet another milestone recently when two foreign journalists/filmmakers visited the institute as part of their research works. While at PEFTI, Kasper Tveden and Peter Kristensen, both journalist and photojournalist respectively, also took out time to record materials for their documentary, entitled: Nollywood Scenes.
In their words, Nollywood Scenes; was based on the story, history, current state and the future trends of Nigeria’s movie industry, globally known as Nollywood.
The duo who are from Denmark, also interviewed the management, lecturers and students of the revered film institute. They were also given the opportunity to film classes-in-session as well as other training activities taking place at the institute.
Speaking further, the elated duo maintained that they opted for the institute based on strong recommendations from Nigerian filmmakers and clips sourced from the award winning Dutch documentary on PEFTI, entitled: De Film Industrie van Nigeria.

a good reason to thank and magnify the good Lord recently.
The auspicious occasion was the solemnization of holy
matrimony between their lovely daughter Nosa and Dele, the
son of renowned broadcaster and advertising guru, Mr. Dele
Adetiba. The well-attended wedding was formalized at the
Alile’s family worship centre, St. Joseph Chosen Church of
God, Lekki, Lagos, while the lavish reception held at the
British International School, also situated in the same vicinity.
Dignitaries from all walks of life also graced the
reception and warmly felicitated with the newest couple and
their grateful families.
It was even glaring that both parents of the couple could
not hide their joy, and kept
smiling and thanking all for coming.
Also, it was obvious that even Dr. Clement Alile, apostle Hayford’s sibling and a former secretary to the Edo State
Government, who sat with the former governor of Akwa-Ibom
State, Obong Victor Attah, thoroughly enjoyed himself.
However, the majestic arrival and presence of the CEO of
Oceanic Bank Plc., Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, further lit up the
venue of the reception. She mesmerized all with her
intimidating dark goggles, which did not leave her eyes till
she left with her entourage.
Nosa, is a sociologist, while her husband is an economist
and they both live and work in Barack Obama’s country.

Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta
Development Commission (NDDC), are happy that the amiable
father of five, is gradually bouncing back to life after the
sad demise of Alaere, his wife of over two decades.
They were so excited to see the strong man of Bayelsa State
politics at the recent wedding of the daughter of Apostle
Hayford Alile, in Lekki, Lagos.
The still mourning Alaibe, whose philanthropic deeds is
legendary, did not only attend, but kept smiling and
exchanging hearty greetings and pleasantries with friends
and well wishers throughout his wondrous stay at the
reception ground.
As usual, he was swathed in a well-fitted and now famous
gray-coloured Niger Delta attire, (Resource Control), with a
matching black bowler hat, that helped in making him look
younger without any sign of mourning.
Meanwhile, it would be recalled that a strong delegation from the Presidency, which was led by
the Vice President, Dr. Jonathan Goodluck, recently paid the
widower a condolence visit in his Opokuma, Bayelsa State
country home.

Owerri, the clean and green capital of Gov. Ohakim’s rejuvenated Imo State is fully set to host this year’s edition of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant. The event, which holds amid glamour and glitz this Saturday, April 4, in the heart of the city, is already serenading the state indigenes and opening up tourism potentials for would be guests and investors.
According to the organizers, all is ready as the Imo State government, which is still celebrating its recent electoral victory at the Appeal Court, has marshaled out plans in collaboration with Silverbird Entertainment, the organizers, to ensure a most memorable experience for the contestants, stakeholders and invited guests. Stakeholders applaud NFVCB’s holistic licensing

Several filmmakers, stakeholders and practitioners, including Mr. Charles Igwe, who are all licensed distributors under the new Film Distribution and Exhibition Framework of the National Film & Video Censors Board (NFVCB), have further applauded Mr. Emeka Mba, the D.G., of the board, for making the new initiative broad, holistic and all encompassing. They also maintained that even if NFVCB decides to license multiple film distributors, the number would not be too much, considering the magnitude of the market, which extends to West Africa, America, West Indies, Brazil and the UK, etc.
Speaking separately, Mr. Igwe made the remark at the Film Distributors Convention put together by NFVCB, at the recently held BOB TV, at Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Abuja. According to him, the market is quite large to absorb all the licensees if they are focused.
He therefore advised his fellow distributors to concentrate more on how they want to structure their businesses, adding that distributors should not concern themselves only on how to get money to make films, but worry about structures that would allow them take full control of the delivery of the product to the people

Also speaking in one of the sessions at the convention, Mr. Mba, told the distributors that though they might have differences, some of which were irreconcilable, they should however, be able to identify the common enemy and collectively deal with it.
The Censors Board boss further emphasized the need for structures, which he said though, are already existing minimally, but there is need to strengthen and formalize them for maximum potentials.
Mba, also stated that every good enforcement is based on the cooperation of stakeholders. He therefore, solicited for quality information from them and assured that with the renewed energy garnered from the forum, the Board is now poised to be more aggressive in enforcement activities.

Students root for Diamonds in the Rough


The second edition of Diamonds In The Rough (D.I.T.R), an interactive talk show primarily designed to serve as a platform where people who have become successful by following the principles of diligence and integrity, would influence young people positively, recently held.
Several youths and undergraduates witnessed the well-attended gathering that held at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.
According to Saints Media Limited, the organizers of the event, which made its debut last year, the objective was basically to help young people see that its possible to be successful and rise above all odds through diligence and hard work.
“Its an interactive talk show where we showcase and project role models to enable youths in tertiary institutions realize that success is deposited in them, and that they only have to discover their worth and work at it.” Unlike last year’s event, where the duo of Mitchell Elebge and Blessing Awosika spoke, this year’s meeting had Mavi Isibor and Debo Talabi as Guest Speakers. The organizers further disclosed that the talk show would soon storm the campuses of the University of Lagos and Lagos State University, respectively.

AGN pleads for Ibinabo, plans solidarity rally

The national leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), under the presidency of Mr. Ejike Asiegbu, has called on the Lagos State Government to temper justice with mercy over the five-year imprisonment slammed on top actress and former beauty queen, Ibinabo Fiberesima.
In a passionate plea to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), and the deceased family, Mr. Asiegbu, who spoke on behalf of Nigerian actors and entertainers, pleaded that the embattled actress should be forgiven. He further argued that sending her to jail for five years or more, would never bring Dr. Giwa, the deceased, back to life.
He further promised that as soon the crisis is over, AGN would partner Miss Fiberesima in setting up a foundation for the deceased, who was knocked down on February 26, 2006.

Mr. Asiegbu, also painfully recounted how a driver mistakenly killed his dear mother some years ago. “They pleaded and we allowed the man to go, because if we had sent the victim to jail, that would not bring back our loving mother. Till date, we are still mourning the sad exit of our mother. Please, Ibinabo, who is a mother of three, should be forgiven, it was a mistake that could have happened to anybody”.
Meanwhile, a Solidarity Rally, which would simultaneously take place on Monday, in all the State chapters of the guild, is being planned for the actress by AGN. The Lagos Chapter would march from Surulere to Alausa, Ikeja, where they are expected to meet with Gov. Fashola, to further plead on her case.

Few weeks after the nation-wide release of her latest movie, When The Heart Lies, leading female film producer, Vivian Ejike, has hit locations again for another big budget movie.


Impeccable information at our disposal has it that unlike When the Heart Lies, where Omotola Jalade – Ekeinde played lead, the new flick, which is yet-to-be-titled was powered by Genevieve Nnaji alongside other top acts.
With lensing almost coming to an end, pretty Ejike, however promised that the movie would definitely hit shelves before the end of the year, amid razzmatazz and plenty hype.
Speaking on the movie and why she rushed back to set, the ex top banker hinted that it was in the best interest of Nollywood and her undying passion for quality filmmaking.
Commenting further, the Co-CEO of Nollywood Distributions Limited, maintained that the new movie would also be premiered nationally and international before being released. “As we speak, my crew and I are already rounding off production in some choice locations within Lagos metropolis. We had fun on set and worked like a true family. By the time this new movie hit shelves, the world will begin to appreciate us better, for doing quality movies. It is another heart-wrenching story from Purple Pine Production,” she maintained.

The “militants infested city of Port-Harcourt, capital of Rivers State, literally stood still over the weekend for gospel singer, Asu Ekiye, during the launch of his new videos.
Ekiye and his De Nu Dimension band members for the first time unveiled their new musical works entitled: Na God! Back to Base 3, amid glitz and grandeur.
Financed and produced by Mr. Anayo Odobeatu, the honcho of O’Jez Music and packaged by Iyke Harrison, the 11-tracker videos are already on shelves, and airing on both national and international stations.
Elated Ekiye, now dubbed the new prince of Niger Delta, while speaking at the crowded event, thanked immensely, all those that had in one way or the other contributed to the success and growth of his career.
Also included in the well-shot videos was Ekiye’s live performance in London, during his last tour.
Currently on O’jez Music, who are also marketing the new VCD and DVD, Ekiye, who shuttles between Lagos and the Niger Delta, is optimistic that the new videos would further help reposition his thriving career.

Top actor and one of the leading names in Nollywood Kanayo .O. Kanayo, unknown to many of his teeming fans, has quietly gone back to the classrooms, to further enrich himself and gather more knowledge for the challenges ahead.
Gathered reliably that the former best actor in African, courtesy of AMAA, has gone back to his Alma Mater, the University of Lagos, for a postgraduate degree in Political Science.
And since going back to the classrooms, the celebrated thespian has been busy burning the midnight candles, in preparation for his forthcoming exams.
In a related development, the Imo State born role interpreter recently thrown open his new corporate office, for businesses and consultations.
Situated in the heart of Surulere, Lagos, the new edifice is decorated with several awards won by the star in the course of his over two decades career.
According to KOK, the new office, which houses Yobafa Ventures, his corporate outfit will also be packaging both national and international productions, for a networked clientele.
Meanwhile, Kanayo has been missing in some “arty” places since going back to the classrooms.
An insider later squealed to us that by going back to school for his Masters, Kanayo, is strategically repositioning himself for Imo and national politics.


Multi Choice thrills with Let’s Dance


Though “Let’s Dance” from Multi Choice Nigeria has been airing for a while, but the recently held Sunday, March 15 session on DStv, spoke volumes about the untapped culture of dance in Nigeria. It all started with Tana Adelana, the delectable hostess of the reality show, announcing to the audience that the show had entered its most competitive stage with the fate of the remaining 12 contesting couples absolutely left in the hands of the viewers. The icing on the cake was the adoption of cute names by the surviving couples: Xtreem, Gold, Elect, Imagin, Nova, Apex, Ideal, ExWhy, Light, Enigma, Style and Vibes. Painfully too, beginning from March 22, the least voted couples were also eliminated from the show.

Bayelsa beefs up security for AMAA


Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Timipre Sylva has assured all and sundry that adequate security measures have been put in place to protect lives and property ahead of the forthcoming AMAA awards in the state on April 4, 2009.
The governor who noted that the awards has attracted tourists and showbiz celebrities to the state in the last four years, added that the state is investing to improve the infrastructure and further support the growth of tourism.
Elaborating more on the security issue, which has been the main concern of many on the coming AMAA, the governor assured that there will be no threat to security as Bayelsans are good and hospitable people.
''We want to say that there is no bad security situation that will make our state unsafe to visitors during the AMAA awards. Apart from last year, which held in Abuja-though hosted by the state, the three previous editions have taken place in Bayelsa without any security problem.
'The security agencies are working round to ensure good security coverage for the event. The truth is the state is at peace and there has not been any reported case of kidnap and militancy. We are working to put people at work through our capital projects and turn the state economy around,” the governor explained.
Also speaking, the state’s Director General in charge of Tourism, Mr. Nathan Egba maintained that AMAA has helped in projecting the image of the state to international communities with numbers of foreign guests and artistes that have been attending awards with its attendant global media coverage.
He added that the state’s involvement with AMAA was to let the world know that the negative perception associated with militancy has not been as bad as it has been reported most especially by the Western media.
'We are ready to host the world again this year and all arrangements have been put in place to deal with all logistics issues that have been identified in the past with the view of improving on them,' he said.

African Jewel Award to honour Stephanie Okereke

The organizers of the revered African Jewel Award, African Focus Incorporated (AFI), US, has picked Stephanie Okereke, an award-winning Nollywood actress, as one of the recipients at this year’s event. Sexy Okereke will be recognized during the 2009 Annual African Goodwill Awards dinner on April 25.
According to the organizers, Okereke's tenacity, wit, intelligence, grace and natural acting abilities has earned her a reputation as one of the best actresses on the African continent and in Nollywood, the third largest film industry in the world. A graduate of English and Literal studies, Okereke made her first venture into film in 1997. By 2003, she had already won the Reel Awards "Best Actress" for her role in the movie "Emotional Crack.” In 2005, she was a nominee for the Africa Movie Academy Awards [AMAA]. On her way to AMAA, however, tragedy struck when she was involved in a terrible car accident that left her with a broken leg and burns on her face and hands. Okereke, with a fighting and determined spirit, bounced back and by 2006, she won the Afro-Hollywood Awards, Film Makers USA Award for Excellence with subsequent awards in 2007 for the Miriam Makeba Award for Excellence and 2008 Beyond the Tears Humanitarian Awards for her work against
rape and vesico vaginal fistula and HIV/AIDS.
Not satisfied with being just an actress and wanting to create a voice and other roles for African women in Africa's film industry, Okereke came to the United States to study film at the New York Film Academy at Universal Studios, Los Angeles. Armed with her knowledge, intelligence, determination and creativity, Okereke established her production company "Next Page Productions" and has recently expanded her portfolio to include the titles of director, writer and producer in her first feature Hollywood-Nollywood hybrid film, "Through the Glass," creating what she hopes is a preview of the direction and roles African women will embrace in the film industry. Amazingly, the film is up for nomination in this year’s AMAA, for the Best Picture category. Other distinguished nominees alongside Miss Okereke, in the forthcoming award include: US born and Grammy award winning singer, Chaka Khan, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan, Monique, Hope Foye and apostle
Frederick Price.


UBA pledges more support for AMAA


As plans for the fifth edition of Africa’s most glamourous and talked about movie awards reaches feverish pitch, United Bank for Africa, has further pledged its unalloyed support, commitment and continued sponsorship of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), as a demonstration of its good intentions to always promote the art and entertainment industry.
The bank noted that the award, which has been embraced across Africa going by amount of entries for this year’s edition from all parts of the continent, is designed to promote creative excellence and healthy rivalry among filmmakers on the continent.

O’ Jez to honour Peter Igho


All is now set for the grand reception of Mr. Peter Igho, the veteran TV personality, by the organizers of the monthly O’Jez Entertainment Forum.
The event, which coincides with the birthday of Mr. Igho, also a former top shot at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), holds in the evening of this Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the upscale O’ Jez Entertainment Centre, tucked inside the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

GOWA searches for true Niger Delta Women


An annual award aimed at recognizing the exceptional qualities of the genuine Niger Delta women, who in spite of the several challenges facing them and the region, have not given up, would soon be unveiled.
Tagged: Gist Outstanding Women Awards (GOWA), it further seeks to honour and celebrate the unsung heroines of the troubled region, who have achieved immensely and helped put smiles on faces through various philanthropic initiatives.
In the words of the initiator and publisher of Gist magazine Mrs. Sotonye Fulton, the Niger Delta region is a classic case of contradictions and exploitations.
The setbacks notwithstanding, she noted that the region is hugely blessed with an abundance of outstanding people, especially women, who in spite of the challenges bedeviling the region, have continued to make indelible marks in their chosen careers, with a view to moving the region forward.
“The award, which we hope to make very glamourous and attractive is in recognition of the dignity in labour and exceptional qualities of the Niger Delta women. It is hoped that by honouring these female achievers, they would in turn serve as mentors to the up and coming ones for a better tomorrow”. The award holds in June, and it is expected to attract prominent sons and daughters from the region, as well as entertainers and celebrities.

Doting father of three and leading entertainer Basorge Tariah and his lovely wife, Doris, recently gathered some special friends, colleagues and associates, for the one year birthday bash of their lovely daughter Serena.
The well-attended groove, which held penultimate Sunday, inside the lush gardens of the serene Ogudu GRA, Playground, Hilltop Estate, had excess victuals for all the invited guests.
As the Chief Host, Mr. Tariah, was constantly on his toes and ensured that things went smoothly at the evening gathering.
Among those at the occassion was his wife, and top actress Kate Henshaw, who breezed in from the UK, solely for the bash and Jedi, the self-acclaimed well-Fed comedian of the Federal Republic, ably supported him.

Globacom’s largesse tears Nollywood apart

The recent plan of telecommunications giant, Globacom to endorse and make some top Nollywood stars its brand ambassadors is currently causing ripples in Nollywood. And according to our reliable insider, if not properly managed, might tear Nollywood apart and probably pitch the Otunba Mike Adenuga led organization against some leading practitioners in the nation’s motion picture industry.
We further gathered that some of the complaints put forward by most of the aggrieved practitioners, who are also popular names, was that Glo’s selection process was heavily biased, smacks of tribal sentiments, devoid of due process and totally against global best practices. “It is a known fact that some top officials at Glo, only hand picked their actors and actresses friends in Nollywood, while others made the list based on tribal sentiments and favouritisms. If you look at the controversial list thoroughly, you will agree with me that some of those chosen, as ambassadors do not have any business being on the list, let alone representing Nollywood for Globacom, especially now that we are re-branding Nigeria.
We are not saying that Glo must use all Nollyywood stars as their ambassadors, all we are asking for is that the selection process should be very transparent and devoid of ethnic colourations or favouritisms. Even some qualified stars earlier chosen were later dropped without concrete reasons, and we suspect foul play.
We are using this opportunity to call on Glo to immediately rectify this anomaly and save Nollywood from further disintegration,” disclosed this popular practitioner in Nollywood, who wants to remain anonymous. Funke Akindele still waxing stronger


No doubt, rave of the moment actress cum producer Funke Akindele is definitely living her dreams and at the same time, having a blast in the nation’s motion picture industry.
The Jenifa star recently landed another big one by gracing the cover of this month’s edition of True Love West Africa, a leading female magazine.
Amiable Akindele, whose monster-hit movie, Jenifa, has four nominations for the forthcoming African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), had her life-changing story and pictures splashed on six pages of the all-gloss magazine. In the riveting interview Akindele, a trained lawyer, (will she ever practice?) spoke on a wide range of issues and concluded that the good Lord has been good to her and her flourishing career.
31-year-old Miss Akindele, who is also a scriptwriter, is however optimistic that 2009, would definitely be a good year for her and her thriving career, adding that marriage prospects would be a welcome development, but with a caveat, “ I’m taking my time”.

Oby Edozieh breezes in


After close to a month in the UK and the US, for vacation and business, top actress and producer Oby Gold Edozieh, finally breezed into town early this week. Miss Edozieh who confessed to us that her trip was successful, memorable and fun-filled, further stated that she over stayed because of the several activities lined up by the foreign partners she worked with, while the trip lasted.


Looking trim and sexy, the actress from Anambra State, is also back to add finishing touches to her latest film, Show-stoppers, billed to hit shelves soon.
Since her arrival, the leggy actress has been busy shuttling in-between locations for piled up movie jobs as well as other engagements and activities. She hopes to hit location soon for a new movie from her stable. D’monarchs set to rock again


The singing blood brothers of Chijioke Stevenson and Chibueze Chris Ngige, better known as D’monarchs, began their blossoming career professionally in 2002. The crooners who are relatives of the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chris Nigige, however, dropped their debut album entitled: Right On Time, in 2005, though with little impact.
Ever since, their budding career in the music industry has continued to attract attention and accolades from industry watchers and practitioners.
D’monarchs, who are also neck deep into RnB and Hip-Hop songs, are currently in the studios working tirelessly for their new and second album. According to the duo, the work, an II tracker, due for a nationwide release is entitled: Nte Ade Ete (Nothing dey happen), alongside the musical videos.
Speaking on their incursion into music, they argued that it flows naturally and that they believe so much in it. “We believe so much in music, unfortunately our parents never wanted us to go into music, but we stuck our ground, despite their opposition. Our first album did not fly very well, but we have gone back to the studios to correct those mistakes in our second album, which is coming out soon.”
The also hailed Dr. Ngige, the former governor, for delivering democracy dividends to the people of Anambra State, while in office, adding that he remains a huge source of inspiration.

Language and cultural TV show debuts


A new and insightful cultural TV reality show has been unveiled by Deepside Entertainments, with the aim of helping to promote the rich Nigerian cultural heritages and rich languages. Packaged as First Nigerian Languages and Cultural Mastery Fiesta (NILACUM), the organizers said it is their own way of discovering and encouraging talents among Nigerian youths.
“There are great talents in our country and many of them especially our youths are lying fallow and undiscovered. They end up roaming the streets and doing nothing”, argued the honcho of Deepside Entertainment, Mr. Victor Uzoma.
Lending her voice to the forthcoming show, the Director, Corporate Affairs of the proudly Nigerian entertainment outfit, Mrs. Oby Kushimo said the reality show would enhance friendly relations among all the tribes of the nation to foster peace and national unity. Continuing, she said that participants would register online while they would get response via e-mail and SMS.
At the end of the registration exercise, all the short listed participants would be housed for intensive languages and cultural elements lectures. “They would be trained on various Nigerian languages, cuisines (local dishes), cultural dances, history, ethnic fashion and more,” she added.
Expectedly, winners will go home with fantastic prizes as well as sponsored local and international tours. The maiden edition of the reality show would also feature music, drama and comedy.
It comes up in the second quarter of the year and has been endorsed by the Lagos State Government as well as top brands and Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

AMAA ‘relocates’ Nollywood to Burkina Faso

The Nigerian motion picture industry globally known as Nollywood was temporarily and literally relocated to Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, for this year edition of the revered Pan African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO). The visibility and huge representation of Nollywood at this year’s event, which is also the 21st edition and 40th anniversary of the biennial festival, was made possible by Mrs. Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, the CEO, of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). For the very first time in the history of AMAA, which holds in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Saturday, April 4, 2009, the Nominees’ List, was unveiled in FESPACO, at a very colourful ceremony that was also well-attended. Among the leading stars in Nollywood that flew to Burkina Faso with workaholic Mrs. Osigwe, to witness the event live and further hoist the Nigerian flag higher were: Joke Silva, Afolabi Adesanya, (also a jury member at FESPACO), Chinedu
Ikedieze, Osita Iheme, Sunny Mc Don and Tony Anih. Others on the list include: J-Martin, Steve Ayorinde, Saint Lukman, Chika Chukwu, Afam Chiazor, Fred Atigogo and Yours Sincerely.
We later saw other big names like: Fred Amata, Keppy Ekpeyong, Bond Emeruwa, Madu Chikwendu, Iyen Agbonifo, Tunde Kelani, Mahmoud Alli-Balogun, Rekiya Atta, Joseph Ubaka and a host of others at the historic unveiling.
Speaking briefly at the press conference that preceded the unveiling of AMAA nominees, Mrs. Osigwe, maintained that the new partnership between AMAA and FESPACO, would definitely bring good tidings to the African film and cinema sectors, adding that AMAA would continue to work closely with the organizers of FESPACO and African film professionals. Both events were well attended by African and foreign filmmakers.





Aki and Paw-paw mobbed in Burkina Faso

The way and manner the good people of Burkina Faso as well as other movie buffs from within and outside the continent ‘mobbed’ and milled around Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ikedieze, who are famously known as Aki and Paw-paw, proved that they are unarguably among the most popular faces in Africa.


Through out their stay at FESPACO, fans and admirers were constantly choking them for photos and autographs. Surprisingly, cattle rearers and artisans on the streets of Burkina Faso, were not left out of the rush. Even, while we were coming and going, their teeming fans and admirers kept queuing up for pictures and autographs. Their presence at both Ghana and Togo airports caused quite a big stir. We just hope that some corporate outfits in Nigeria would leverage on this and further make their presence known in Africa by endorsing these dynamites. We are also saying kudos to these two great actors, for being great ambassadors of not only Nollywood, but also Nigeria in general, while in Blaise Campaore’s country. Hope Dora Akunyili, is also taking note of this free branding for Naiija?

At the just ended FESPACO, Olu Jacobs, the veteran actor husband of Joke Silva, who accompanied Mrs. Osigwe to the event, was conspicuously missing. Though, despite the absence of her loving hubby, Mrs. Silva, the only Nigerian leading female thespian to have won the AMAA, twice separately, kept herself busy by helping Mrs. Osigwe, to coordinate activities at the global film gathering. She was looking radiant and sexy through out her stay in Burkina Faso.
Some mischief-makers on the trip, insisted the delectable role interpreter would have glowed more than she did, if her doting hubby had joined her on the trip. Trust us to squeeze out from Uncle Olu, why he did not make the wondrous trip with madam.


J-Martins thrills @ AMAA unveiling bash

Naija’s new Hip-hop sensation J-Martins set Burkina Faso on fire at the grand unveiling of nominees for this year’s AMAA, which held at the upscale Libya hotel. The “Good or Bad” crooner thrilled the capacity filled hall with scintillating songs that kept them asking for more, even when the ceremony was over.

Though other African acts thrilled at the turbo-charged and unforgettable night of fun and relaxation, but J-Martins’ outstanding performance, which kept many busy on their toes, remains the best and most electrifying. The event climaxed with the unveiling of the Nominees List in 24 categories, which many applauded for being thorough and all encompassing. Speaking after his performance, J-Martins, said he was dazed that foreigners could accept his music and even demanded for more. He promised to embark on a continental tour soon.


Bayelsa shines @ AMAA Nominations Night

Bayelsa State government, one of the proud sponsors of the annual African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), sparkled and sizzled in Burkina Faso at the glamourous Nominations Night, which was beautifully put together by Mrs. Osigwe and her creative team. Aside the eye popping banners with images of the oil rich State governor, Timipre Sylva, dotting strategic positions inside and outside the event’s venue, a special delegation also flew in to represent bowler hat-loving Silva. Hon. Nathan Egba, the Director General of the Tourism Development and Publicity Bureau, ably led the team. The very articulate DG got a standing ovation after delivering his wondrous speech extempore. In fact, while the evening where the 24 categories vying for AMAA’s glory lasted, the comperes kept reminding the filled hall that Bayelsa, has been the major host of the awards since inception. Lest I forget, Sylva’s image was also emblazoned on the beautiful event’s
programme.

Nollywood tops AMAA nominations List

At the very colourful ceremony held at upscale Libya Hotel, Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, The Jury of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), unveiled to the entire world, the 24 categories that would be keenly contested in Bayelsa State, early next month.
At the evening event tagged: Nominations Night, which was hugely graced by filmmakers from around the world, who were also in that country, for the just ended FESPACO, the tension-soaked list was unveiled and read to the public. The categories include: Best Document (short subject), Documentary (feature), Short Film, Animation, Sound, Editing, Art Direction, Make Up, Visual Effect, Original Soundtrack, Promising Actor and Actress respectively. Other nominees are in the areas of: Best Performance By An Actor and Actress In Leading Roles respectively, Child Actor, Supporting Roles for Actor and Actress, Best Film In African Language, Cinematography, Costume, Best Film From Nigeria, Screenplay, Picture and Director. Among all the Nigerian films vying for honour and recognition at this year’s AMAA, Tunde Kelani’s Arugba, has the highest number of nominations. It got nominated in nine different categories, followed by Funke Akindele’s Jenifa, with four
nominations. Cindy’s Note and Reloaded, from Izu Ojukwu and Emem Isong, got three nominations each, as well as Apaadi and The Assassin. Stephanie Okereke’s Through the Glass and some other Nigerian movies are also contesting for glory and gains at the awards proper slated for April 4, 2009.

Imprisonment: Family unites for Ibinabo

The family of former beauty queen and star actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima, who was recently sentenced to a 5 year prison term by Justice Deborah Oluwayemi of the Lagos High Court, for manslaughter over the death of a medical doctor, Mr Suraj Giwa, has rallied round the embattled star.
It would be recalled that the sentence was as a result of an appeal by the Lagos state Government against the verdict of an Igbosere Magistrate court, which had earlier given Ibinabo a seven-year jail term or a fine of N100, 000.00, which she opted for.
According to Ibinabo’s publicist, the new sentence triggered a horrendous health issue, which has landed Ibinabo at an undisclosed hospital with doctors battling frantically to save her life.
Meanwhile, her loving family members are also working tirelessly to ensure that Ibinabo, a mother of three, does not spend the next five years behind bars. They recently filed a motion for stay of execution on the judgment, through their lawyers. This motion, we reliably gathered comes up for hearing at a Lagos High court on March 19, 2009, with a suit No. LCD/4CA/07. The family lawyers, Kamadu, Wodu and Associates, are handling it, as well as the appeal.
“This means that the actress will not be arrested or committed to jail pending the determination of the motion for stay of execution and bail, pending her appeal,” hinted a member of the family.

New act, Fabian Nwafor, joins ‘em

Emerging gospel talent, Fabian Nwafor has finally hit shelves with his debut effort entitled Oba, after a protracted copyright infringement battle with an Idumota-based marketer.
Freeflow Entertainment, a new outfit owned by young entrepreneur, Sammy Mobolorunduro, will market the seven-tracker album.
Some of the songs in the eight tracker album include: Oba, Jah Rules, Onyeoma, My Load, I Pray, This Kind God, Oba Medley and Onyeoma Medley.
The Enugu State born artiste who speaks Yoruba language fluently, believes the album would appeal to all Nigerians irrespective of language and age with its array of genres.
While expressing his gratitude to the marketing outfit for its faith in him, the young musician disclosed that he is confident that the new contractual relationship, which is expected to last for two years, will bring in good tidings and help elevate his budding career.
On his part, Mr. Mobolorunduro, the honcho of Freeflow Entertainment revealed that the outfit, which is just making an inroad into the entertainment industry with Nwafor, as its first act is poised to “redefine the norms” with its unique offering.
Meanwhile, the young artiste recently gave a taste of the album to a large audience at a launching ceremony, which held at Rehoboth Christian Centre, Lekki, Lagos.

Few weeks after breezing in from his base in Sweden, Hip-hop crooner, Lurrenz, is already spending some sleepless nights in the studios working tirelessly for his new set of singles.

The project, we reliably gathered is a collaboration between him and the duo of Konga and Pasto Goody, with Pupa Orits Williki, as its producer.
According to Lurrenz, whose last effort, African Woman, is still making waves, he hopes to engage in more collaboration with some popular Nigerian musicians before jetting back to base. He also added that the soon-to-be-completed work would be hitting the airwaves in the next couple of weeks.
Lurrenz, who is also of the view that Nigerian artistes are doing great home and abroad, is seriously planning a two-way tour that would kick start in Nigeria and climax in Europe. He further disclosed that modalities for the big-budget tour would soon be made public as well as the foreign collaborators he would be working with.
The act that miraculously survived the recent earthquake in Trelleborg, Sweden, would be having a special thanksgiving soon to celebrate his mysterious survival.

The star- studded nuptial, which held in Osun State, was also graced by Erelu Keji Okunowo, Mr. Anayo Odobeatu among several other big players within and outside the nation’s music industry.
The ceremony climaxed when the trio of Kollington Ayinla, Asu Ekiye and Rolling Dollar mounted the stage and titillated guests at the well-attended reception ground, which was beautifully anchored by Baba Ijesha. Several other artistes later thrilled at a post-wedding soiree held for the latest couple, in Lagos, a few days ago.

The nation’s motion picture industry globally known as Nollywood was hugely represented at the recent launch/grand opening of Heritage House Square Boutique Hotel, which held amid glitz in Ajao Estate, Lagos.
Some of the Nollywood stars that were specially invited to the event, which held on Valentine’s Day, were: Mr. Ejike Asiegbu, the national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), who breezed in with Ogechi, his lovely wife. We also spotted the quartet of Segun Arinze, Ramsey Noah, Keppy Ekpeyong Bassey and Charles Novia, who all came with their wives. Also at the gathering were: Funke Akindele, Jennifer Eliogu, Simisola Opeoluwa, Sammie Okposo, Abubakar Yakub, Femi Adebayo, Adaora Ukoh, Emma Ehumadu and Chioma Okoye. Aside Nollywood stars; Princess Abba Folawiyo, Nnamdi Ozobia and other dignitaries graced the beautiful evening event that had victuals flowing from all corners of the expansive hall.
In his brief remarks, Chief Emeka Obodoechina, the Chairman of the newly opened hospitality haven, thanked all for coming and promised to raise the stakes in the hospitality sector.
In his own speech, Mr. Ronnie Hani, the outfit’s Managing Director, assured all of quality and professional services always. The X5 band supported by David Onwuemene, supplied music at the event, while the award- winning crew from Kingsley Ogoro Production (KOP), covered the event with hi-tech equipment. Mr. Ogoro, who was also at the launch, was busy calling the shots, while many of his colleagues were relaxing and having a blast.
