Stars wow @ Guinness 250 anniversary groove

It was celebration galore for fun seekers as Guinness Nigeria Plc joined its counterparts globally to celebrate the 250 years of the great brand at the Oceanview ground, Victoria Island, Lagos, recently.
Led by a pack of top – rated Nigerian artistes, and ably complemented by the multiple awards winning Jamaican born king of dance hall, Sean Paul, the event was nearly marred by a crisis of interest between Sean Paul and 2 Face Idibia. The crisis, which started from the backstage, was blown open by the duo of Psquare, who openly told the excited crowd that the organizers of the event didn’t want Idibia to perform. The announcement elicited angry reactions from the crowd, who started hurling canned beverages and plastic bottled water on the stage. In fact, all efforts to pacify them by the show’s anchor and disc jockey, Basketmouth and Jimmy Jatt respectively, proved abortive. After the shocking announcement, the duo of Psquare, angrily left the stage, thus paving the way for many guests to also leave the venue angrily. The organizers, who eventually brought Idibia back to perform, before Sean Paul, finally resolved the ugly scenario, which lasted for over an hour.
However, prior to the above drama, the crowd hardly had any form of dull moment, as cerebral comedian and one of the hottest in Nigeria, Basket Mouth took the loyal consumers of Guinness to high level of rib cracking jokes.
First to grace the stage was Africa’s number one Disc Jockey, DJ Jimmy Jatt, who thrilled the crowd endlessly from his wheel of steel.
Next on stage was emerging rap crooner, Mister Incredible popularly called MI. He did not fail in his bit as he rapped the crowd to a cloud of ecstasy. As MI was departing, the crowd was given a feel of the Dublin concert with a video of British artiste, Estelle, performing.
He was immediately followed by Wande Coal, the newest sensation from the Mo’Hits entertainment crew who performed with so much dexterity to the excitement of the crowd. Wande Coal ended his performance when Natalie Imbruglia was thrilling the crowd live in Brooklyn, via live telecast through the large multimedia screens mounted on the stage
The Bar of the worldwide celebration, was raised when one of the hottest performing artistes, D’Banj, took the excitement to an ecstatic level with his glowing stage artistry. The Koko Master, who has mastered the art of stage entertainment with his unique style of performance kept the crowd screaming and shouting with excitement as he gave one rendition after another with songs from his all time bests.
The level of fun and excitement sky-rocketed when one of the hottest artistes in Nigeria, and MTV BASE award winner, Idibia, mounted the stage alongside Nigeria’s dynamic duo of Psquare, they expanded the frontiers of excitement at the event.
Their Performance was however pepped up as Sound Sultan; another Nigerian artiste who was not originally billed to perform in the much-publicized Guinness 250 concert mounted the stage to complement in the stage collabo of the greatest acts of Nigeria.
The much awaited Jamaican born dancehall King Sean Paul stormed the stage in the company of three hotly dressed female dancers to a tumultuous scream from the crowd after, which he performed songs from his recent album before taking the crowd on a rendition of some of his most successful hits with song like ‘Still In Love’ and ‘Get Busy’.
His performance, coupled with artistry display of his sumptuously dressed female dancers got the crowd excited as they partied into the wee hours of the night. Another plus to the event was the firework, which sparkled into the air, to the admiration of all.

Gbenga Adeyinka becomes Glo ambassador

Pacesetting entertainer and the most pronounced Comedian of the Federal Republic (CFR), Gbenga Adeyinka, “The First”, has hit another goldmine. The cerebral rib cracker/ publisher recently joined the elitist league of Globacom’s ambassadors. And since grabbing the mouth-watering deal, Adeyinka has not stopped celebrating and proclaiming the good news to all and sundry, even beyond our shores. In fact, Adeyinka, who lost his dear mother early this year, now goes to events donning specially designed attires with the ubiquitous Glo’s lemon colour. And before you could say Jack, elated Adeyinka, would shout it to the rooftops that Otunba Mike Adenuga, the Guru, personally signed him on as a special ambassador of the leading telecom outfit. As if that was not enough, he would further add that unlike other ambassadors, his signing is in perpetuity, courtesy of Adenuga’s large heart and special love for him and his style of comedy.
Another close pal of the top-flight comedian recently squealed that Adeyinka, has concluded plans to spray his Armada SUV, lemon and possibly all his designers’ apparels too. So, when next you see the fun-loving comedian swathed in Glo’s traditional colour, remember to ask for your own share of the largesse from the Guru.

Soludo finally joins the race

Its no longer news that the immediate past governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has finally joined the long list of those contesting the Anambra governorship race, after several months of speculations, horse trading and hide and seek. What perhaps many are oblivious of is the fact that several Nigerians, especially Soludo’s close associates and admirers are not in support of his new found passion in the constantly troubled politics of Anambra.
Part of their reasonable argument is that the respected professor of Economics should have laid low for now, instead of rushing to contest. They further argued that because of the fact that most of the banks he cleared and openly certified okay during his glamourous tenure at the CBN, are currently the ones discovered to be sick with huge and embarrassing debt portfolios, by the new no nonsense helmsman, Sanusi.
They also posited that instead of jumping into politics, Soludo should be in a sober mood, taking into cognizance the fact that most of his trusted bank chiefs, while he reigned supreme at the CBN, are still in EFFC’s custody, despite the temporary bail granted them.
To further worsen Soludo’s case, a group of angry youths from Anambra State, recently warned him to desist from joining the race to the government house in 2010.
Operating under the aegis of Anambra Youths for Reformed Leadership (AYRL), the group advised Soludo to consider global financial opportunities that would benefit him and Anambra people, rather than delving into the dirty politics of the State.
With over 40 aspirants jostling for the top job, including the incumbent, Peter Obi, observers, especially keen followers of events in the State, are waiting to see how far Soludo would go in the race. It has been widely alleged that Chief Anthony Anenih and a few moneybags are the forces propelling him. Time will definitely tell, especially now that, he has also paid and picked the guber form, through the help of a proxy.

Hankook boss plans grand burial for late dad

Sir Dan Uchendu, the amiable boss of Dan Duko group of companies’ the sole manufacturers of Hankook tyres and batteries, is planning a four-day carnival-like burial for his late dad, Chief David Nwokolo Uchendu, aged 103.
According to the programme of event, duly signed by Dan Duko, a church service at the deceased compound, Okpunoeze, Uruagu, Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State, would kick start the funeral rites on Thursday, September 17, while the condolence visits and internment would respectively hold on Friday 18 and Saturday 19, at the same venue. Friends and well wishers are expected to join Dan Duko and his entire family members for the outing service, holding at the Pro-Cathedral Church of St. Mary, Uruagu, Nnewi, on Sunday, September 20.
Already, several of Dan Duko’s colleagues and business associates have stormed Nnewi, for the grand burial, currently the talk of the town.
The deceased, whom Dan Duko described as a great man and father, will surely be missed dearly.

That Raymond Obieri’s picture

Though, he has been sacked, detained and finally granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, but the enlarged picture of Raymond C. Obieri, the former Chairman of Intercontinental Bank, is still hanging conspicuously in one of their banking halls.
At a particular branch of the bank formerly led by Erastus Akingbola, in the heart of Surulere, Obieri’s enlarged and beautifully framed picture, where he adorned a pin-striped suit, still greets customers on a daily basis.
The question on many lips, especially observant customers, is what the picture of a sacked and dethroned chairman is still doing in a banking hall? May be, the manager of that branch is very sympathetic to the plight of Obieri. Be that as it may and also considering that what is good for the goose is equally good for the gander, one would have expected that the picture of Erastus Akingbola, the sacked and deposed former CEO of the bank, should have been hung there too.

Temporary freedom for sacked bank chiefs

Temporary reprieve finally came the way of three of the sacked and detained bank chiefs, this Monday, through a bail granted them by a Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos.
After more than a month in EFFC’s unfriendly and not cozy custody, Dr. Cecilia Ibru, Sebastine Adigwe and Bartholomew Ebong, of Oceanic Bank, Afribank and Union Bank respectively, were granted bail in the sum of N100m each. Their other colleague and the former CEO of Finbank, Okey Nwosu, was also granted bail on Tuesday alongside Raymond Obieri, the Chairman of Intercontinental Bank and six other directors of the bank.
Other clauses tied to the bail bond, in the ruling delivered by Justice Daniel Abutu, was that the embattled former top bankers must provide high profile sureties that must be resident in the highbrow areas of Lagos or Abuja.
Another caveat attached to the stringent bail conditions was that the ex-bank chiefs must not travel outside Nigeria throughout the duration of the trial. They were also ordered to report to the EFFC’s Abuja office, every first working day of the month.
Shockingly too, Peter Ololo, the honcho of Falcon Securities, who has the single highest individual debt portfolio, running into several billions of Naira, was also granted bail alongside two directors of Union Bank Plc. Gathered that since their freedom, family members, friends, well-wishers and business associates have not stopped thronging their respective homes, to rejoice and clink glasses.
Of particular interest was the visit of some Delta State Chiefs, who stormed the premises of the court in their traditional attires, to show solidarity for their ‘wounded’ daughter – Cecilia Ibru. While they were doing that, some kids nearby were also carrying placards and protesting against corruption in the society.

According to the organizers, a red carpet reception/cocktail, would herald the dinner proper.
The TV personalities duo of Nonhle Thema of Channel O and Denrele Edun, would host the red carpet reception, while Thema, will solely host the dinner segment.
Popular entertainers expected to spice up the evening include: Naeto C, Sasha, Omawunmi, I go dye, Explicit and DJ Brown, while D Banj, would hold the crowd spellbound at the grand performance of the night.

Double honour for Opa Williams

Opa Williams, the comedy merchant extraordinaire and movie/soap producer, will be the special guest at this month’s edition of O’jez Entertainment Forum holding in the evening of Sunday, September 27, 2009, at O’jez Entertainment Centre, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Chief Joseph Odobeatu, the honcho of O’jez, in a statement revealed that Opa Williams will on September 27 “dance to unlimited highlife music as a mark of honour to him because he truly deserves it.”
Williams, according to Odobeatu, is being honoured for his immense contributions to the growth and development of stand up comedy in the country. “Without mincing words, Opa Williams is unarguably the father of modern day stand up comedy. But for the revolution he began some 12 years ago, we would not have had the influx of comedians that are making people laugh on a daily basis now and making money. His comedy show, Nite of A Thousand Laughs is no doubt the biggest in the country at the moment, it is a periodic festival that people look forward to in all the major cities in Nigeria, Europe, South Africa and I heard he is going into America soon. In the movie industry where he began his artistic career, Williams has left his mark there too because he is among the few filmmakers that make didactic films. His television programmes are second to none, so tell me, why shouldn’t a man like that be celebrated? O’jez Entertainment Forum, the
event that holds every last Sunday of the month, celebrates excellence and people that have distinguished themselves in their individual fields of endeavours, Opa Williams has, that is why we have decided to honour him next Sunday,” Odobeatu said.
As usual, O’jez Band and the Evergreen Band, will be on hand to entertain the expected large crowd at the evening event that will be attended by Nollywood stars, music icons as well as elders in the entertainment industry such as veteran broadcaster Ambassador Segun Olusola, Chief Femi Esho among others. The compere is ace comedian Mr. Patrick while president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria; Ejike Asiegbu will read Williams’ citation. “It is going to be an evening of highlife music, comedy, dance and unlimited fun as the nation gathers at O’jez on Sunday, September 27 to celebrate one of its distinguished sons”, Odobeatu submitted.
Meanwhile, in another development, Pay TV Company HiTV, is partnering Opa Williams’s forthcoming comedy show tagged: Nite of A Thousand Laughs, holding at the MUSON Centre, Lagos on October 1. The annual show is usually part of activities marking the nation’s independence anniversary. Mr. Justin Akpovi-Esade, HiTV’s Public Relations Manager in a signed statement said the company agreed to be Nite of A Thousand Laughs media partners because “the two brands are proudly Nigerian products and such a marriage is good for the nation. HiTV began a revolution some two years ago that broke the myth that Pay TV is for the rich only. Nigerians irrespective of their status, since HiTV came unto the satellite TV scene, can watch Pay TV in their homes and pay a monthly subscription that will not make them rob a bank; Nite of A Thousand Laughs over a decade ago began a revolution that has popularized stand up comedy and has given young Nigerians a lucrative
means of livelihood. The
creator Opa Williams has given birth and nurtured a brand, just like HiTV, that is going places. So for us, we are proud to be Nite of A Thousand Laughs’ media partners and we are happy to be part of a growth process. I am sure Williams chose HiTV from among other Pay TV outfits because of our uniqueness and people friendly nature”

2 Face Idibia now NAFDAC ambassador

Another well-deserved feather was officially added to the already filled cap of 2face Idibia, when he was recently appointed an ambassador by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC). In a bid to increase the efficiency of the agency, particularly in the area of public awareness which is a key element in the fight against the prevalence of fake, substandard and expired drugs and food items, Idibia has been saddled with the responsibility of lending his voice and star power to the laudable cause in the capacity of a global representative. Efe Omorogbe of Now Muzik, the outfit managing Idibia, confirmed that the official presentation will be done at a one-day sensitization workshop organized for all the 774 local government chairmen to be held in Abuja, at the THISDAY Dome, on September 24, 2009. The invitation letter signed by Dr. Paul Orhii, Director General of the agency highlighted that the move was part of a holistic and
multi-dimensional approach towards eliminating counterfeit drugs, unwholesome food and other sub-standard regulated products in the country.
The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Hajia (Dr.) Turai Umaru Musa Yar’Adua will declare the event open as the Grand Matron of NAFDAC and Special Guest of Honour at the occasion.

This definitely cheering news to youths, especially those with adventurous instincts and traits, Rubies Ink, the new darling of wannabe role models in the entertainment sector, recently unveiled its new project. Primarily targeted towards pupils in Nigerian secondary schools, the new empowerment programme is tagged: “Project Capable.”

However, the project is geared towards building self-confidence and self-determination in the lives of young adolescents, whose self-defeatism, under achievements and other social vices have become their second skin.
Project Capable is billed to commence in Lagos and later move to other parts of Nigeria with a consistent message of positive self-help, hope and effective social change.
Students of secondary schools will assemble before celebrities like Koffi, Jimmy Jatt, Kate Henshaw, Ofunneka, Funke Akindele, Sound Sultan, Freeze and several others to receive rich and inspiring words of advice and encouragement.

The two-day event, which held elaborately at the Palace Temple headquarters of the Liberty Gospel Church, was well attended by top government officials, royal fathers, Nollywood stars, celebrities, diplomats, Nigerians in the Diaspora, family members and well-wishers.
